Namibia Safari: When to Go? The Best Times of Year to Visit an Incredible Country

Are you thinking about planning a safari in Namibia, so you googled “Namibia safari when to go” and came across our article?

That means two things:

  1. first, you’ve never been to Namibia (ouch… not great);
  2. second, you’ve found the very best people to help you experience this adventure: us (great choice!).

That’s why in this article we’ll look at the best time to go on safari in this incredible country, month by month.

When to go on safari in Namibia? A month-by-month guide

Best time to go on safari in Namibia

Let’s get straight to the point: the period from May to October is ideal for visiting Namibia and going on safari. This is the winter dry season.

Why? Let’s see right away.

Starting in May, the rains end and the heat arrives: animals move around in search of water, while large predators lie in wait to hunt prey coming to drink.

As you can imagine, this is the perfect time to spot the best wildlife species.

If you love taking beautiful photographs, you should absolutely plan your safari in Namibia between September and October, for one very simple reason.

The pleasant season is coming to an end and the rains are on their way, so animals take advantage of it to enjoy the last sunny days and keep roaming the savannah.

In other words, it’s an event not to be missed!

Average temperatures in Namibia

Keep in mind that temperatures almost never drop below 25°C, so yes, it’s hot!

In this table, we show you the average temperatures month by month.

from January to March around 30°C
from April to August slightly lower (around 25°C)
September and October up to 35°C (wow, that’s hot!)
November and December still hot (around 32°C)

And what about humidity?

Our advice is to keep this factor in mind too, so you can choose not only the best time, but also the right outfit!

In general, between January and April humidity is fairly high, though not extreme, while from October to December (which, as we said, is the hottest period) humidity levels are low.

In any case, the period between August and October is undoubtedly the least humid.

Let’s summarize this data in another table too.

January, February, March and April 55%-65%
May, June and July around 40%
August 30%
September 20%
October 30%
November and December 40%-50%

These are the months to (absolutely) avoid if you want to go on safari in Namibia

When should you avoid going on safari in Namibia? When it rains (obviously…)!

So, cross out January, February and March in red. However, climate change is making things a bit unpredictable, so the rains may arrive later. Depending on the year, they may even last until April, but it’s always best to check the weather forecast.

During this period it would be very (very) difficult to spot animals in the major safari parks, such as Etosha National Park.

And what about November and December?

Well, let’s be honest: no one is stopping you from traveling to Namibia during this period, but why do it if you risk seeing more vegetation than animals? In November it starts to rain and wildlife becomes harder to spot.

If you’re planning a safari in Namibia, we recommend choosing the best time so you can get the most out of this experience.

So, to sum it up…

May, June, July and August ABSOLUTELY YES
September and October yessss
November and December uhm...
January, February and March nope, sorry guys
