This Great Journey to Madeira

There’s a place, not too far from us, that feels a bit like São Paulo in Brazil, a bit like the Amazon, and a bit like Hawaii. Sounds crazy, right? But we promise—it’s absolutely possible. To believe it, all you need to do is pack your backpack and set off on: our epic Madeira group adventure trip!

Get ready to be launched onto the greenest island you’ve ever seen, with an 8-day itinerary we created ourselves after experiencing it firsthand. We’ll take you wandering among incredible waterfalls, lush green trails, volcanic beaches, and viewpoints where jaw-dropping sunsets leave us speechless.

This 8-day trip is self-drive, which means no 50-seat buses and no rigid schedules to follow. We’ll base ourselves in Funchal, the island’s picturesque capital, and head out each day to explore every corner of Madeira. Our days are filled with hikes that aren’t too demanding (as long as you enjoy walking). Basically, we’ll be surrounded by Madeira’s unspoiled nature, with plenty of other amazing activities in store too—like swimming with dolphins or going canyoning in the forest.

In 8 days, you’ll find yourself walking among the red cliffs of Ponta de São Lourenço, slipping beneath the waterfalls of the Rabaçal trail, climbing up to Pico Ruivo (the roof of Madeira), getting lost in the misty Fanal Forest, and strolling among the little houses of Santana. One evening you’ll be on a catamaran watching the sun dive into the Atlantic; the next, you’ll be sipping local wine in a fishing village. In short: every day brings something different, and every day is a burst of pure adventure.

And since there’s so much to experience, here’s a quick recap of some of the incredible highlights we’ll enjoy together:
🍌 Funchal, the capital
🍌 Mercado dos Lavradores
🍌 Hiking at Ponta de São Lourenço
🍌 The Rabaçal trail
🍌 Pico Ruivo, the roof of Madeira
🍌 Santana
🍌 The hike to Pico do Arieiro

We don’t travel just to say “I’ve been there,” but to feel “wow, I’ve changed.” We’ll take you on the most beautiful on-the-road adventure trip of your life. Everything you imagine—and then some.
Madeira, here we come!

Boring but important stuff to know

To sign up for the trip, you will need to:
🍌 Pay a deposit, which will be indicated during registration, to confirm your spot.
🍌 The remaining balance must be paid 45 days before departure.

And what payment methods are available?
🍌 You can pay by bank transfer.
🍌 You can pay by card.
🍌 You can pay for your trip in up to 12 installments with HeyLight.

What's included, and what's not

Included in the trip price

Not included in the trip price

Common fund

What about shared expenses? How do they work?
No one likes traveling with stacks of local cash and doing the math on a calculator every evening. So, we’ll spare you that stress: traveling with us is much easier.

Each participant takes turns paying shared expenses and recording them in the SplitUp app, which at the end of the trip splits them equally among the whole group. We estimate these costs to be between €150 and €220 for this trip, depending on the number of participants.

🍌 Fuel for the vehicles, tolls, and parking.
🍌 Full kasko damage insurance for the vehicles (€69).
🍌 Entrance fees to parks and monuments.
🍌 Team leader’s expenses.
🍌 Tourist tax.

Pick your extra activities

Customize your itinerary!
Great idea, with us you can. You can tweak every itinerary by adding the extra activities you want to do on the trip. We've tested and approved every single one. So instead of putting up with an "all inclusive" and paying for stuff you don't like, you're free to choose.

You might have questions, we definitely have answers

Deposit, balance and insurance

Here’s how payments work:

🍌 A deposit is due at the time of registration to confirm your spot.
🍌 The remaining balance must be paid 45 days before departure, directly through your personal account.
🍌 You can pay by bank transfer, card, or in installments. Choose whichever option is most convenient for you.
🍌 The final trip price, including any extras you select, will be shown during the registration process, in the confirmation email, and in your personal account.

🍌 Before departure, you can purchase trip cancellation insurance to cover the cancellation of your trip, if the reason for cancellation falls within the covered cases listed in the insurance PDF. You can view and download this PDF during the registration process, before confirming your trip.
🍌 Purchasing the cancellation insurance we offer is not mandatory. If you feel it does not meet your needs, you are free to purchase your own policy instead—and we’ll still be friends and travel buddies.
🍌 Sto Gran Tour accepts no responsibility if the reason for a participant’s trip cancellation does not fall within the cases covered by the insurance policy.
How air travel works

🍌 With us, your airfare is always included in the trip price, departing from Milan or Rome depending on the departure date.
🍌 For an additional fee, you can choose a different departure airport. For example: Catania, Naples, Bologna, London… it’s up to you. And if you can’t find your airport, just write to us.
🍌 The group may have different flight schedules, depending on airline availability and the order in which participants sign up.
🍌 We’ll share your flight times in your personal area as soon as they become available.
🍌 A booking for two people does not automatically include seats next to each other on the plane, as seat selection is paid. However, you can request and add it from your personal area.
🍌 Unless otherwise specified, the flight booking does not include checked baggage. If you really, really want to add it, fair enough! You can add it from your personal area.
🍌 If you are absent from the airport on the day of departure due to personal unforeseen circumstances, delays, or cancellations of connecting flights or other means of transport, you will need to reach the destination independently with another flight at your own expense. We’ll help you find the flight, provided you buy the first round of beers when you catch up with us.
The no-flight option

If you'd prefer to arrange your own flights, no problem! You can select the “without flights” option when you sign up. We’ll deduct the cost of the flights from the trip price, and that’s it. Please note:

🍌 With the “without flights” option, airport transfers are not included.
🍌 With the “without flights” option, domestic/internal flights are still covered by us.
🍌 With the “without flights” option, we ask you to share the flight times you’d like to book so we can confirm whether they are compatible with the rest of the group.
🍌 With the “without flights” option, before purchasing your flights you must wait until the trip is confirmed. If you buy them before confirmation, we will not reimburse the airfare portion.
Self-drive

How annoying is it when, on your trip, you have to rely on buses and drivers with standard working hours? And have you ever seen a backpacking adventurer rolling around in a 50-seat coach with a private driver? Nah. On our trips, we prefer the self-drive formula. That means you plant yourself in the driver’s seat and drive — you experience the road firsthand. You’re the one behind the wheel, if you want to be. And if you don’t, that’s fine too. There’s always a need for someone to navigate through the desert, put on the perfect playlist, and be the first to say, “Guys, I think that explosion might have been our tire — hang on.”

🍌 Can we take turns driving? Yes. This Sto Gran Viaggio is organized to keep driving flexible: anyone in the group can get behind the wheel, as long as they let us know in their personal area before departure.
🍌 Insurance and what it covers: You’ll find all the details in the “vehicle insurance” FAQ. Easy.
🍌 Vehicle pick-up: To collect the vehicle, Sto Gran Tour provides its own credit card, so even travelers who don’t have one can still join the trip (you’re welcome).

🍌 Route and flexibility: We created the itinerary with our own hands, after experiencing it ourselves the hard way. It’s designed to cover the coolest stops, at the right pace, with sensible breaks along the way. But it’s not set in stone: if we want to stay longer, change route, or explore a place, we decide it together as a group. That’s the beauty of self-drive!

🍌 What happens if we mess up the car or it breaks down? We won’t get arrested or end up behind bars. The vehicle is insured (see the “vehicle insurance” FAQ). In any case, the Team Leader will handle the process by contacting the company or local partner for assistance. And along with the Team Leader, the Sto Gran Tour staff will always be available remotely, 24/7. Really: day and night, every single day.
Vehicle insurance

In the true spirit of adventure and to enjoy a more authentic journey, the group will drive the rental vehicles in self-drive mode.

🍌 An extra convenience for those traveling with us: Sto Gran Tour provides its own credit card as the guarantee for the vehicle rental, taking on the required guarantee with the rental company, including any possible damages or additional costs. This means that even travelers who do not have a credit card can still drive, and the vehicle pick-up process is simpler for the whole group.

🍌 Each vehicle will be covered by full Kasko insurance. The cost (a small amount), shared among the participants, is included in the common trip expenses. You can pay your share directly in your personal area before departure. We believe this is the best way to avoid significant expenses if needed and to ensure that all responsibility does not fall on the volunteer drivers.

🍌 If you prefer not to pay the small Kasko fee, you may choose to rent the vehicle using your own personal credit card or pay the rental excess/deposit required by the rental company. You will be able to select this option in your personal area.

At the time of pick-up, all participants (not only the drivers) are responsible for checking that the insurance is in place and for taking photos of the vehicle, so as to avoid any unpleasant surprises when returning it.
Types of accommodation

The accommodation arrangements are indicated in the “Accommodation and transport” tab, in the “Boring but important things to know” section you’ll find on this page. Depending on the departure date and the trip, the arrangement shown on the website may vary from what is described there. For this reason, you will never see it stated that a specific room type (whether double, triple, or quadruple) is guaranteed with 100% certainty. This is simply because we often do not have full control over our suppliers’ availability. Also keep in mind that, on a group trip, sharing is part of the travel experience: besides an amazing adventure, you may also end up sharing rooms and bathrooms. Every traveler for themselves? Not really. If having a double room is absolutely essential for you (like, truly non-negotiable), please write to us before departure! That way we can avoid issues, misunderstandings, and unnecessary hassle for both sides. Sounds like a fair deal?
The Team Leader Sto Grand Tour

When you travel with Sto Gran Tour, there’s always a Trip Leader with you. We don’t work with polished bloggers who turn travel into social media content, and we don’t collaborate with people who just want a free trip. Our Trip Leaders are certified guides—experienced, passionate young men and women, as well as licensed tour escorts.

What exactly do they do on the trip, you ask?! Well, the Trip Leader coordinates the group throughout the journey, handling logistics and providing ongoing support while building team spirit, without being a traditional tour guide. They do not act as a nature guide, but they make sure each stage of the trip runs according to plan, as far as possible given the circumstances and the needs of the group. They share useful tips about the itinerary, help manage timing, and make it easier to organize each day. Basically, a saint. They’re the go-to person for questions, unexpected issues, and logistical needs. In short, like a super-functional Swiss Army knife who is always on the ball.
Group and travel companions

Groups usually range from 3 to 17 people, plus a Trip Leader. The exact number depends on the trip. The average age on our trips is generally between 25 and 45, with some exceptions.

Our travelers usually come from all over Italy, and they’re open-minded people who love new experiences. You don’t have to be an experienced traveler, and you don’t need to have joined a group trip before. It also doesn’t matter whether you’re traveling solo, with your girlfriend, or with your brother. What really matters is the spirit you bring: the desire and curiosity to explore and experience the world. It’ll be everything you imagine — and then some.

About a month before departure, we’ll open the Wazzzzup group so you can start getting to know the other participants. You’ll find the Sto Gran Gruppo link in your personal area.

We confirm and activate the trip once there are at least 4 to 6 participants. If we don’t reach the minimum number, you can change your departure date free of charge to the next available trip, either for the same destination or a different one. Or you can request a full refund. So when will you know whether the trip is confirmed or not? About a month before departure, when we finalize the number of participants.

P.S. Are you cursing us out because you’d love to travel with us, but you think you’re outside the age range? Write to us — maybe we can still make it work and travel together. And in the worst-case scenario, at least you can insult us in person.
Group confirmation

Almost all of our trips are confirmed. For groups that are still being confirmed, we will send you regular updates through your personal area. If we do not reach the minimum number of participants (generally 3), you can change your date free of charge to the closest available departure, either for the same destination or a different one, or receive a full refund. For trips with only one departure date, the "Trip Status" is shown.
How extra activities work

You can personalize your trip with extra activities, which you can choose either when you book or later on. Please note that:

🍌 If an activity is canceled by the provider, it will be refunded.
🍌 Any special equipment required for each activity will be provided on site.
🍌 You can also choose activities after booking and add them from your personal area for an additional €5.
🍌 We cannot guarantee activity availability if you add them close to the departure date.
🍌 During peak seasons, such as New Year’s and summer, we cannot guarantee activity availability unless you book them well in advance.
🍌 Activity prices may increase at the providers’ discretion.

One more thing! The activities are organized by local providers, and we at Sto Gran Tour are not responsible for changes, availability, or cancellations.
Travel itinerary and changes

Even if you are joining an organized trip, the spirit is that of a true road trip. Absolutely! It’s a real journey: unexpected events, pleasant detours along the way, stops, weather-related disruptions, and more. In practice, what does this mean?

🍌 The itinerary, as well as the order of the days, may change.
🍌 Nature is in charge. We do not provide refunds of the amount paid for any program changes caused by weather conditions.
🍌 Mechanical issues can happen. We do not provide refunds of the amount paid for any program changes caused by mechanical problems (for example, a flat tire, a blown fuse, a broken window, a stolen side mirror, and things like that).
🍌 If travel days or activities are missed due to bad weather or issues caused by suppliers, we will try to make them up if the group agrees to the new travel solution and only if the Trip Leader considers it feasible.
🍌 The layout/size of the means of transport and accommodations may differ from what is indicated in the travel program due to local availability.
Will there be a lot of walking? Do I need to be physically prepared?

Yes, we do walk a bit. But there’s no need to train before the trip — you just need to be in good physical health. Madeira is a vertical island: the jaw-dropping waterfalls and the rainforest-like jungle are often at the end of a trail. To really experience them, we have to walk a little.

In practice, that means four hiking days, between 2 and 4 hours each, with no climbing and nothing technical. Our pace gives us time to look around. If at some point we feel like spending half an hour just standing under a waterfall, we do exactly that — hanging out there, soaked and happy, with silly grins on our faces.

And if one day you don’t feel like walking? You can skip it, no problem. Just let the trip leader know the night before and enjoy your own day in the little town, wandering between markets, the ocean, and a few beers. We’ll meet again in the evening for dinner, where you’ll have to sit through the stories from everyone who did go hiking (your loss!!!)

An evening on your trip

An evening on your trip

Imagine being in the heart of Funchal after a wonderfully full day. The kind you feel in your legs, your shoulders, and even a little in your cheeks from laughing so much. This morning you climbed all the way up to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak on the island, where at 1,800 metres it almost felt like standing among the clouds. Actually, no — you really were right in the middle of them. Beneath you, a soft white sea of cloud; above you, a postcard-blue sky; and all around, dark rocky ridges rising like islands. Every now and then, a gust of wind would open a gap in the clouds and, far, far below, you could catch a glimpse of the ocean. Then back down again, bend after bend, all the way to São Vicente, along that road that winds between green cliffs, waterfalls dropping straight from the rock, and tunnels carved into the mountain. Windows down, the scent of eucalyptus in the air, and at every hairpin bend a collective “oh wow, look!” On the north coast, the ocean crashes hard against the black cliffs, and once again you stop just to take it all in. And now here you are: sitting at a little restaurant table in the Zona Velha, among cobbled lanes and painted doors, with limpets sizzling on the griddle, warm bolo do caco with garlic butter, and Poncha being passed around the whole group. Sweet, strong, deceptive. The group leader has just suggested waking up at dawn tomorrow for another trek and, after a few not-so-kind words thrown his way, you all agreed. Every single one of you. Because deep down you know it will be worth it, and he knows that you know it too. There’s laughter, food, another round is ordered, and everyone is already remembering today when someone says, “Guys, that was definitely not a shortcut — that was a cliff edge!” Someone swears they saw their life flash before their eyes, someone else is showing photos as proof. The evening is peaceful, the air is mild, and the harbour glimmers below. And you’re happy with what you’re living, just like that, simply.

Gran Madeira is everything you imagine — and then some.
