This Great Journey in Alaska

Fair warning and long adventure ahead: one of the few ways to truly immerse ourselves in the wild essence of this incredible country is by camper. So what do we do? We head off to the Great Alaska and experience it aboard awesome motorhomes!

There are countries you explore, and then there’s Alaska: a place that gets under your skin. Remote, wild, and powerful. A land where bears fish in rushing rivers, glaciers crash into the fjords, and nature does whatever it wants.
On this 13-day Great Group Adventure Trip, we split into fearless crews. Each crew, with its own motorhome, takes care of supplies, sets up camp every day, cooks its own meals, and handles all that good stuff. As the saying goes: if you wanted the camper life, now you’ve got to live it!

There are plenty of adventure trips in Alaska out there, and then there’s this Great Alaska Adventure Trip: pure nature exploration. We go in search of total freedom, surrounded by wild nature and free-roaming animals, without depending on bus schedules or classic tourist guides. We drive our own beasts! Can you imagine how amazing it is to drive along the Alaska Highway?

Freedom and nature are the watchwords. We drive through forests and mountains to go on a trek in Denali National Park, continue with another hike along the Horseshoe Lake Trail, and reach stunning little lakes where we can spot beavers and their impressive dams. And we’re only just getting started! We go on more hikes among spectacular glaciers in Glacier Bay, spot bears catching salmon among the fjords, light campfires under the stars, and sail through the fjords of the Gulf of Alaska in search of whales. We also land on the Kenai Peninsula and wrap up this Great Trip with the Road of 7 Lakes, a forest walk along the Lower Winner Creek Trail and then, just like that, we’re back in Anchorage. AAAAAAAA (enthusiastic scream).

Now let’s calm down a bit. Here’s a quick summary of some of the amazing highlights we’ll experience together:

🍌 Denali National Park.
🍌 The real bus from the famous film “Into the Wild.”
🍌 The Horseshoe Lake Trail.
🍌 Russian River Falls with bears and salmon.
🍌 Whittier and the fjords of the Gulf of Alaska.

We don’t travel just to say “I’ve been there,” but to feel “wow, I’ve changed.” We’ll take you on the most beautiful adventure trip of your life. Everything you imagine, and then some.
Alaska, here we come!

🍌 The remaining balance must be paid 30 days before departure.

What's included, and what's not

Not included in the trip price

Common fund

What about shared expenses? How do they work?
No one likes traveling with stacks of local cash and doing the math on a calculator every night. So, we’ll save you that hassle: traveling with us is much easier. Each participant takes turns paying shared expenses and records them in the SplitUp app, which at the end of the trip splits them equally among the whole group. We estimate these costs will be between €400 and €550, depending on the number of participants.

🍌Fuel for the vehicles.
🍌Parking and tolls.
🍌Comprehensive vehicle insurance
🍌Firewood for the campfire
🍌Bear spray
🍌State campgrounds
🍌Trip Leader’s expenses.

Pick your extra activities

Customize your itinerary!
Great idea, with us you can. You can tweak every itinerary by adding the extra activities you want to do on the trip. We've tested and approved every single one. So instead of putting up with an "all inclusive" and paying for stuff you don't like, you're free to choose.

Book your date

You might have questions, we definitely have answers

Deposit, balance, and insurance

Here’s how payments work:

🍌 A deposit is due when you sign up to confirm your participation.
🍌 The remaining balance is paid 30 days before departure, directly in your personal account area.
🍌 You can pay by bank transfer, card, or in installments. Choose whatever is most convenient for you.
🍌 The final trip price, including any extras you select, will be shown during the booking process, in the confirmation email, and in your personal account area.

🍌 Before departure, you can purchase cancellation insurance to cover your trip cancellation, provided the reason for cancellation falls within the covered cases listed in the insurance PDF. You can view and download this PDF during the booking process, before confirming your trip.
🍌 Purchasing the cancellation insurance we offer is not mandatory. If you feel it does not meet your needs, you are free to take out your own policy, and we’ll still be friends and travel buddies.
🍌 Sto Gran Tour accepts no responsibility if the participant’s reason for cancelling the trip does not fall within the cases covered by the insurance.
How air travel works

🍌 With us, your flight is always included in the trip price, departing from Milan or Rome depending on the departure date.
🍌 For an additional fee, you can choose a different departure airport, such as Catania, Naples, Bologna, London… it’s up to you. And if you can’t find your airport, just write to us.
🍌 The group may have different flight schedules depending on airline availability and the order in which participants signed up.
🍌 We’ll share your flight times in your personal area as soon as they become available.
🍌 Booking for two people does not automatically include seats next to each other on the plane, as seat selection comes at an extra cost. However, you can request and add it through your personal area.
🍌 Unless otherwise stated, the flight booking does not include checked baggage. If you really, really want to add it, fair enough! You can do so through your personal area.
🍌 If you are absent at the airport on the day of departure due to personal unforeseen circumstances, delays or cancellations of connecting flights, or other means of transport, you will need to reach the destination independently on another flight at your own expense. We’ll help you find a flight, provided you buy the first round of beers when you catch up with us.
The flight-free option

If you’d prefer to arrange your own flights, no problem! You can select the “without flights” option when you sign up. We’ll deduct the flight cost from the trip price, and that’s it. Please note:

🍌 With the “without flights” option, airport transfers are not included.
🍌 With the “without flights” option, domestic flights are still included and arranged by us.
🍌 With the “without flights” option, we ask you to share the flight times you’d like to book so we can confirm whether they are compatible with the rest of the group.
🍌 With the “without flights” option, before purchasing your flights you must wait until the trip is confirmed. If you buy them before confirmation, we will not refund the airfare portion.
The self-drive

How annoying is it when, on your trip, you have to rely on buses and drivers who work standard hours? And have you ever seen a backpacking adventurer riding around in a 50-seat coach with a private driver? Nah. On our trips, we prefer the self-drive formula. That means you hop into the driver’s seat and drive, experiencing the road firsthand. You’re the one behind the wheel, if you want. And if you don’t, that’s fine too. There’s always a need for someone to navigate through the desert, put on the perfect playlist, and notice that “guys, I think that explosion might have been our tire—hold on.”

🍌 Can we take turns driving?
Yes. This Epic Trip is set up to keep driving flexible: anyone in the group can take the wheel, as long as they let us know in their personal area before departure.

🍌 Insurance and what it covers
You’ll find all the details in the “vehicle insurance” FAQ. Easy!

🍌 Vehicle pick-up
To collect the vehicle, Sto Gran Tour provides its own credit card, so even travelers without one can still join the trip (you’re welcome).

🍌 Route and flexibility
We created this itinerary ourselves, after experiencing it firsthand. It’s designed to cover the coolest stops, at the right pace, with sensible breaks along the way. But it’s not set in stone: if we want to stay longer, change route, and explore a place, we decide it together as a group. That’s the beauty of self-drive!

🍌 What happens if we damage the car or have a breakdown?
No, we won’t get arrested or end up behind bars. The vehicle is covered by insurance (see the “vehicle insurance” FAQ). In any case, the Team Leader will handle the process by contacting the company or local partner for assistance. And the Team Leader will always be backed up remotely by the Sto Gran Tour staff, 24/7. Really: day and night, every single day.
Vehicle insurance

In the true spirit of adventure and to enjoy a more authentic journey, the group will drive the rental vehicles in self-drive mode.

🍌 An extra convenience for those traveling with us: Sto Gran Tour provides its own credit card as the guarantee for the vehicle rental, taking on the required deposit and coverage requested by the rental company, including any potential damages or additional costs. This means that even travelers who do not have a credit card can still drive, and the vehicle pick-up procedures are simpler for the whole group.

🍌 Each vehicle will be covered by full Kasko insurance. The cost (a small amount), shared among the participants, is included in the common trip expenses. You can pay your share directly in your personal area before departure. We believe this is the best way to avoid significant expenses if needed and to ensure that all responsibility does not fall on the volunteer drivers.

🍌 If you prefer not to pay the small Kasko fee, you may choose to rent the vehicle using your own personal credit card, or pay the required rental excess/deposit instead. You will be able to select this option in your personal area.

At the time of pick-up, all participants (not just the drivers) are responsible for checking that the insurance is in place and for taking photos of the vehicle, to help avoid any unpleasant surprises when returning it.
Types of accommodation

The camper will be our home on wheels during Sto Gran Viaggio. Oh yes! We’ll travel all around Alaska in awesome fully equipped motorhomes with a fridge, heating, and a kitchen. At night, we’ll sleep soundly in our campers, each accommodating 6 people, with double and queen-size beds, a toilet, and a hot shower. Ah! We’ll stay at fully equipped campgrounds and, where permitted, we’ll also enjoy wild camping.
The Team Leader: This Great Tour

When you travel with Sto Gran Tour, there is always a Tour Leader with you. We don’t work with polished bloggers who turn travel into social media content, and we don’t collaborate with people who just want a free trip. Our Tour Leaders are certified guides—experienced, passionate young women and men, as well as qualified travel coordinators.

What do they actually do during the trip, you ask?! Well, the Tour Leader coordinates the group throughout the journey, handling logistics, providing continuous support, and building team spirit—without being a traditional tour guide. They are not a nature guide, but they make sure each stage of the trip follows the planned itinerary as closely as possible, while adapting to circumstances and the group’s needs. They share useful tips about the route, help manage timings, and make day-to-day organization easier. Basically, a saint. They’re the go-to person for questions, unexpected issues, and logistical needs. In short: like a super-functional Swiss Army knife, always ready and on the ball.
Group and travel companions

Groups usually range from 4 to 17 people and are led by a Trip Leader. The exact number depends on the trip. The average age on our trips is usually between 25 and 45, with a few exceptions.

Our groups generally include people from all over Italy, and they’re open-minded travelers who love new experiences. You don’t have to be an experienced traveler, and you don’t need to have joined a group trip before. It also doesn’t matter whether you’re traveling solo, with your girlfriend, or with your brother. What really matters is the spirit you bring: the desire and curiosity to explore and experience the world. It’ll be what you imagine—but even more.

About one month before departure, we’ll open the Wazzzzup group so you can start getting to know the other participants. You’ll find the Sto Gran Gruppo link in your personal area.

We confirm and activate the trip once there are at least 4 to 6 participants. If we don’t reach the minimum number, you can change your departure date free of charge to the next closest option—either for the same destination or a different one. Or you can request a full refund. So when will you know whether the trip is confirmed or not? About one month before departure, when we review the final number of participants.

P.S.
Are you cursing us out because you’d love to travel with us, but think you’re outside the age range? Write to us—maybe we can still make it happen. And in the worst-case scenario, at least you can insult us in person.
Group confirmation

Almost all of our trips are confirmed. For groups that are still awaiting confirmation, we will send you regular updates through your personal area. If we do not reach the minimum number of participants (generally 6), you may change your date free of charge to the nearest departure, either for the same destination or a different one, or receive a full refund. For trips with only one available date, the "Trip Status" is shown.
How extra activities work

You can customize your trip with extra activities, which you can choose when you book or add later. Please note:

🍌 If an activity is canceled by the provider, you will be refunded.
🍌 Any special equipment required for each activity will be provided on site.
🍌 You can also choose activities after booking and add them from your personal area for an additional €5.
🍌 We cannot guarantee activity availability if you add them close to your departure date.
🍌 During peak seasons, such as New Year’s and summer, we cannot guarantee availability unless you book well in advance.
🍌 Activity prices may increase at the providers’ discretion.

One more thing: the activities are organized by local providers, and we at Sto Gran Tour are not responsible for changes, availability, or cancellations.
Travel itinerary and changes

Even if you’re joining an organized trip, the spirit is that of a true road trip. Absolutely! It’s a real journey: unexpected events, pleasant unplanned moments along the way, stops, weather-related disruptions, and more. In practice, what does that mean?

🍌 The itinerary, as well as the order of the days, may change.
🍌 Nature is in charge. We do not provide refunds of the amount paid for itinerary changes caused by weather conditions.
🍌 Mechanical issues can happen. We do not provide refunds of the amount paid for itinerary changes caused by mechanical problems (for example: a flat tire, a blown fuse, a broken window, a stolen side mirror, and similar situations).
🍌 If travel days or activities are missed due to bad weather or issues caused by suppliers, we will try to make them up if the group agrees with the new travel solution and only if the Tour Leader considers it feasible.
🍌 The layout/size of the means of transport and accommodations may change from what is indicated in the travel program due to local availability.

An evening on your trip

An evening on your trip

Imagine this: outside the motorhome, the sky is a deep, intense blue, and the silence of Alaska is broken only by a few sounds from the forest and the fire we lit. We’re parked with our motorhomes at a makeshift campsite on the shore of this frozen lake. One person in the group has decided to grill everything left in the fridge, another is playing a song on a badly out-of-tune harmonica. And there’s even someone who has already crawled into their sleeping bag because tomorrow we’re heading out early. Someone turns to you and asks, “Do you think the bears are already asleep?” Who knows. You think back to today, when you were walking on tiptoe through the frozen forests of the Kenai Peninsula, hoping to catch sight of a bear snatching a salmon right out of the water. How insanely amazing was that?

This Great Alaska is exactly what you imagine—and then some.
