This Great Journey: Tanzania and Zanzibar

Can you imagine what it’s like to witness the Great Migration? That’s just one of the incredible things we’ll experience on Sto Gran Viaggio Tanzania and Zanzibar!

This once-in-a-lifetime adventure takes place on a 13-day self-drive journey. We’ll be the ones driving our own rooftop-tent 4x4 jeeps—no private driver, come on! We’re free. We’ll camp in the wild, at some of Tanzania’s best campsites, always ready for amazing wildlife sightings. And so we don’t miss a thing, we’ve earned a bit of relaxation toward the end of the trip too: we’re heading to Zanzibar to get sand absolutely everywhere. Yippee!

The trip works like this: we arrive in Arusha, pick up our vehicles, and stock up on supplies. Then we head to Lake Manyara, where we experience our first day of African safari, searching for the famous tree-climbing lions. We’ll probably get a flat tire on the jeep right around here. Then we continue with a short detour to Lake Eyasi, a stop far from the busiest tourist routes. Besides seeing the lake, we’ll also get a taste of local culture by visiting some camps of the Hadzabe people.

We arrive at the Ngorongoro Crater, which is marvelous, unbelievable, extraordinary, breathtaking—honestly, no words can truly describe the beauty of this place. Then it’s time for Serengeti National Park. Here we’ll enjoy an unforgettable safari, and if we want, we can even take a hot air balloon safari and spot the animals from above. We wrap up our overland journey by returning to Arusha, then launch ourselves toward Zanzibar. Here we dive into the culture of Stone Town, the capital, and soak up beaches and atolls like Nakupenda Island. The goal is to come back gloriously sun-soaked.

You might naturally wonder: “But… are we really going to survive all of this?” In theory, yes! Making sure we get home safe, sound, dirty, and incredibly happy will be a Sto Gran Tour Safari Team Leader: a professional tour leader trained at a real FGASA Ranger school in Africa, surrounded by the savannah and its wildlife. Think of them as your guarantee that everything runs smoothly.

In the meantime, here’s a great summary of the amazing highlights we’ll experience together:

Boring but important stuff to know

Deposit and registration

To sign up for the trip, you need to:
🍌 Pay a deposit, which you will see indicated during registration, to confirm your spot.
🍌 The remaining balance must be paid 45 days before departure.

And what about the payment method?
🍌 You can pay by bank transfer.
🍌 You can pay by card.
🍌 You can pay for your trip in up to 12 installments with HeyLight.

We will show you the final cost of the trip, including any extras you select, during the registration process and in your personal area.

What's included, and what's not

Included in the trip price

Not included in the trip price

Common fund

What about shared expenses? How do they work?
No one likes traveling with piles of local cash and doing the math on a calculator every evening. So we’ll spare you that stress: when you travel with us, it’s much simpler.

Each participant takes turns paying shared expenses and records them in the SplitUp app, which at the end of the trip splits them equally among the whole group. We estimate these costs will be between €270 and €370 for this trip, depending on the number of participants.

🍌 Fuel for the vehicles and parking.
🍌 Full damage insurance for the vehicles (69€).
🍌 Tips for local people.
🍌 Firewood for the bonfire.
🍌 Team Leader’s expenses.

Pick your extra activities

Customize your itinerary!
Great idea, with us you can. You can tweak every itinerary by adding the extra activities you want to do on the trip. We've tested and approved every single one. So instead of putting up with an "all inclusive" and paying for stuff you don't like, you're free to choose.

Book your date

You might have questions, we definitely have answers

Deposit, balance and insurance

Here’s how payments work:

🍌 A deposit is due at the time of booking to confirm your spot.
🍌 The remaining balance must be paid 45 days before departure, directly from your personal area.
🍌 You can pay by bank transfer, card, or in installments. Choose whichever option is most convenient for you.
🍌 The final trip price, including any extras you select, will be shown during the booking process, in your confirmation email, and in your personal area.

🍌 Before departure, you can take out cancellation insurance to cover the cancellation of your trip, provided the reason for cancellation falls within the covered cases listed in the insurance PDF. You can view and download this PDF during the booking process, before confirming your trip.
🍌 Taking out the cancellation insurance we offer is not mandatory. If you feel it does not meet your needs, you are free to arrange your own policy, and we’ll still be friends and travel companions.
🍌 Sto Gran Tour accepts no responsibility if the participant’s reason for cancelling the trip does not fall within the cases covered by the insurance.
How air travel works

🍌 With us, your flight is always included in the trip price, departing from Milan or Rome depending on the departure date.
🍌 For an additional fee, you can choose a different departure airport, such as Catania, Naples, Bologna, London… your call. And if you can’t find your airport, just write to us.
🍌 The group may have different flight schedules, depending on airline availability and the order in which participants book.
🍌 We’ll share your flight times in your personal area as soon as they become available.
🍌 Booking for two people does not include seats together on the plane, as this is a paid option. However, you can request and add it from your personal area.
🍌 Unless otherwise stated, the flight booking does not include checked baggage. If you really, really want to add it, sure thing! You can do so from your personal area.
🍌 If you are absent at the airport on the day of departure due to personal unforeseen circumstances, delays, or cancellations of connecting flights or other means of transport, you will need to reach the destination independently with another flight at your own expense. We’ll help you find a new flight, as long as you buy the first round of beers when you catch up with us.
The no-flight option

If you'd prefer to arrange your own flights, no problem! You can select the “no-flight” option when you sign up. We’ll deduct the flight cost from the trip price, and that’s it. Please note:

🍌 With the “no-flight” option, airport transfers are not included.
🍌 With the “no-flight” option, domestic/internal flights are still included and arranged by us.
🍌 With the “no-flight” option, we ask you to share the flight times you’d like to book so we can confirm whether they are compatible with the rest of the group.
🍌 With the “no-flight” option, before purchasing your flights you must wait until the trip has been confirmed. If you buy them before confirmation, we will not reimburse the flight portion.
Self-drive

How annoying is it when, on your trip, you have to rely on buses and drivers who work standard hours? And have you ever seen a backpacking adventurer rolling around in a 50-seat coach with a private driver? Nah. On our trips, we prefer the self-drive formula. Meaning: you plant yourself in the driver’s seat and drive, experiencing the road firsthand. You’re the one behind the wheel, if you want to be. And if you don’t, that’s fine too. You’ll always need someone to navigate in the middle of the desert, put on the perfect playlist, and notice that “guys, I think that explosion might have been our tire… hang on.”

🍌 Can we take turns driving? Yes. This Sto Gran Viaggio is organized to keep driving flexible: anyone in the group can get behind the wheel, as long as it’s communicated in the personal area before departure.
🍌 Insurance and what it covers: You’ll find all the information in the “vehicle insurance” FAQ. Off you go!
🍌 Vehicle pick-up: To collect the vehicle, Sto Gran Tour provides its own credit card, so even travelers who don’t have one can still join the trip (you’re welcome).
🍌 Route and flexibility: We created the itinerary with our own hands, after experiencing it ourselves in person. It’s designed to cover the coolest stops, at the right pace, with sensible breaks along the way. But it’s not set in stone: if we want to stay longer, change course, and explore a place, we decide it together as a group. That’s the beauty of self-drive!
🍌 What happens if we wreck the car or have a breakdown? We don’t get arrested and we don’t end up behind bars. The vehicle is covered by insurance (see the “vehicle insurance” FAQ). In any case, the Team Leader will handle the process by contacting the company or the local partner for assistance. And the Team Leader will always have the Sto Gran Tour staff connected remotely, 24/7. Really: day and night, every single day.
Vehicle insurance

In the true spirit of adventure and to enjoy a genuinely authentic journey, the group will drive the rental vehicles in self-drive mode.

🍌 An extra convenience for those traveling with us: Sto Gran Tour provides its own credit card as the guarantee for the vehicle rental, taking on the required guarantee with the rental company, including any potential damage or additional costs. This means that even travelers who do not have a credit card can drive, and the vehicle pick-up process is simpler for the whole group.

🍌 Each vehicle will be covered by full Kasko insurance. The cost (a small amount), shared among the participants, is included in the common trip expenses. You can pay your share directly in your personal area before departure. We believe this is the best way to avoid significant unexpected costs if needed and to ensure that full responsibility does not fall entirely on the volunteer drivers.

🍌 If you prefer not to pay the small Kasko contribution, you may choose to rent the vehicle using your own personal credit card, or to pay the required rental excess/deposit instead. You will be able to select this option in your personal area.

At the time of pick-up, all participants (not only the drivers) are responsible for checking that the insurance is in place and for taking photos of the vehicle, to avoid any unpleasant surprises when returning it.
Types of accommodation

The tents are mounted on the roof of the jeep — and do you know why? Because that way you avoid sleeping on the ground, in contact with dirt, dust, humidity, and insects. It’s like traveling with a small mobile home. The rooftop tents open easily and are accessed by a sturdy ladder. Inside, you’ll find a thick mattress, pillows, sheets, and a sleeping bag. They’re really comfortable — you have to try them to believe it!

During the trip, we’ll also have the chance to stay in hotels and guesthouses. The accommodation setup is described in the section “Important (and slightly boring) things to know,” under “Accommodation.” Depending on the departure date and the specific trip, the arrangement shown on the website may vary from what is described there. For this reason, you will never see it stated that a specific room type (double, triple, or quadruple) is guaranteed with 100% certainty, since we often do not have full control over our suppliers’ availability. It’s important to keep in mind that, on a group trip, sharing is part of the experience: in addition to an incredible travel adventure, you may also end up sharing rooms and bathrooms.

If having a double room is absolutely essential for you — like, truly non-negotiable — please write to us before departure! That way we can avoid problems, misunderstandings, and headaches for both sides. Deal?
Crews

For Sto Gran Viaggio, we form crews of 4–5 people. Each crew works together to make the adventure a success, managing their own transportation, meals, and in some cases accommodation.

The group usually includes people from all over Italy, and they are all open-minded people who love new experiences. You don’t need to be an experienced traveler, nor do you need to have joined group trips before. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re traveling solo, with your girlfriend, or with your dad. What matters is the spirit you bring: the desire and curiosity to come explore and experience the world. It will be what you imagine — and then some.

One month before departure, we’ll open the Wazzzzup group, where you can start getting to know the other participants. You’ll find the link to the Sto Gran Gruppo in your personal area.
The Safari Team Leader

The Safari Team Leader is a specialized Sto Gran Tour professional who has studied in Africa. They have earned FGASA certification.

And what do they actually do during the trip, you’re probably wondering?! Well, the Safari Team Leader coordinates the group throughout the journey, handling logistics and providing continuous support while building team spirit, without being a traditional tour guide. They do not serve as a wildlife or nature guide, but they make sure each stage of the trip runs according to plan, as much as possible given the circumstances and the group’s needs. They share useful tips about the itinerary, help manage schedules, and make it easier to organize each day. Basically, a saint. They are the go-to person for questions, unexpected issues, and logistical needs. In short, think of them as a super practical Swiss Army knife who is always on the ball.
Vehicle insurance

In the true spirit of adventure and to enjoy an authentic journey, the group will drive the rental vehicles on a self-drive basis.

🍌 An extra convenience for those traveling with us: Sto Gran Tour will provide its own credit card as the guarantee for the vehicle rental, assuming the required guarantee with the rental company, including in the event of any damage or additional charges. This means that even travelers who do not have a credit card can drive, and the vehicle pick-up procedures are simpler for the whole group.

🍌 Each vehicle will be covered by full Kasko insurance. The cost (a small amount), shared among the participants, is included in the common trip expenses. You can pay your share directly in your personal area before departure. We believe this is the best way to avoid significant costs if needed and to ensure that the entire responsibility does not fall on the volunteer drivers.

🍌 If you do not wish to pay the small Kasko contribution, you may choose to rent the vehicle using your own personal credit card or to pay the required rental excess/deposit instead. You will be able to select this option in your personal area.

At the time of pick-up, all participants (not only the drivers) are responsible for checking that the insurance is in place and for taking photos of the vehicle, in order to avoid any disputes or unpleasant surprises when returning it.
How extra activities work

You can customize your trip with extra activities, which you can choose when you sign up or add later. Please note:

🍌 If an activity is canceled by the provider, it will be refunded.
🍌 Any special equipment required for each activity will be provided on site.
🍌 You can also choose activities after signing up and add them from your personal area for an extra €5.
🍌 We cannot guarantee activity availability if you add them close to departure.
🍌 During peak seasons, such as New Year’s and summer, we cannot guarantee activity availability unless you book well in advance.
🍌 Activity prices may increase at the providers’ discretion.

One more thing: the activities are organized by local providers, so we at Sto Gran Tour are not responsible for changes, availability, or cancellations.
Travel itinerary and changes

Even if you’re joining an organized trip, the spirit is that of a true road trip. Absolutely! It’s a real journey: unexpected events, pleasant unplanned detours along the itinerary, stops, weather-related obstacles, and more. In practical terms, what does that mean?

🍌 The itinerary, as well as the order of the days, may change.
🍌 Nature is in charge. We do not provide refunds of the amount paid for trip changes caused by weather conditions.
🍌 Mechanical issues can happen. We do not provide refunds of the amount paid for trip changes caused by mechanical problems (for example, a tire blowing out, a fuse burning out, a window breaking, a side mirror being stolen, and similar situations).
🍌 If travel days or activities are missed due to bad weather or issues caused by suppliers, we will try to make them up if the group agrees to the new travel solution and only if the Trip Leader considers it feasible.
🍌 The layout/size of the means of transport and accommodations may differ from what is indicated in the travel program due to local availability.
Group and travel companions

Groups usually consist of 3 to 17 people, plus a Trip Leader. The exact number varies depending on the trip. The average age on our trips is generally between 25 and 45, with a few exceptions.

Our groups usually bring together people from all over Italy, and they’re all open-minded travelers who love new experiences. You don’t have to be an experienced traveler, and you don’t need to have joined a group trip before. It also doesn’t matter whether you’re traveling solo, with your girlfriend, or with your brother. What really matters is the spirit you leave with: the desire and curiosity to explore and experience the world. It’ll be what you imagine—only even more so.

About one month before departure, we’ll open the Wazzzzup group so you can start getting to know the other participants. You’ll find the Sto Gran Gruppo link in your personal area.

We confirm and activate the trip once there are at least 4 to 6 participants. If we don’t reach the minimum number, you can change your departure date free of charge to the nearest available one, either for the same destination or for a different one. Or you can request a full refund. So when will you know whether the trip is confirmed or not? About one month before departure, when we total up the number of participants.

P.S.
Are you cursing us because you’d love to travel with us, but think you’re outside the age range? Write to us—maybe we can still make it happen. And in the worst-case scenario, at least you can insult us in person.
Group confirmation

Almost all of our trips are confirmed. For groups that are still awaiting confirmation, we will send you regular updates through your personal area. If we do not reach the minimum number of participants (generally 3), you may change your date free of charge to the nearest departure, either for the same destination or another one, or receive a full refund. For trips with only one departure date, the "Trip Status" is shown.
How adaptable do you need to be

A four-star place here might have rough towels and a gurgling drain. And a place without even a single star might serve the best dinner of the whole trip. Ratings are local, and so are the standards used to measure them. In practice, this means:

🍌 Cleanliness may sometimes fall short of expectations. Let the Tour Leader know and we’ll step in, but don’t expect a polished seaside hotel on the Romagna Riviera.
🍌 We work directly with our local providers, without middlemen, and that helps us sort out a lot of things. But we’re not masters of other people’s time, so do allow for some waiting now and then.

Courtesy and respect are always the foundation of exploring the world!

An evening on your trip

An evening on your trip

Imagine being in the heart of the Serengeti. Evening has fallen all of a sudden, the way it only does in Africa: one moment the sky was orange behind the acacias, the next it’s already filled with stars—so many they almost look unreal. You’ve opened the rooftop tent on the big jeep, and the nice, comfy mattress is there waiting for you, practically calling your name. After today’s incredible day, snoring is basically mandatory. Somewhere in the distance (though not that far away), something lets out a roar. You pretend not to notice, but meanwhile you double-check the zipper. Around the campfire, someone still has a face filthy with red dust and hair sticking up in every direction, someone else has cracked open a cold beer, and someone else is battling with the camping stove, convinced that this time they’ll win. Spoiler: they won’t. The pasta will be ready sooner or later. In the meantime, there’s laughter, photos being passed around, and the day being pieced back together with a chorus of “did you see that one?” and “no, wait, I was over there!” Looking back on it, it was unreal. The jeeps lined up along the track, the radio crackling, and then the hill—and behind the hill, there it was: an endless carpet of wildebeest and zebras. To the right, to the left, straight ahead, all the way to the horizon. The sound of hooves, the low calls, the dust rising and blending into the light. Engine off, windows down, no one saying a word. The Great Migration in flesh, bone, and hoof. We really caught it.

This Sto Gran Viaggio is everything you imagine—and then some. Much, much more.
