Namibia's Biodiversity

In the slow-travel journeys dedicated to Namibia, we talked about biodiversity.

Namibia was the first African country to explicitly include environmental protection in its Constitution, and its people benefit directly from the incredible richness of the nation’s natural heritage. Namibia’s conservation plan is based on the principle of Community Based Natural Resource Management, which provides for largely decentralized management of the country’s environmental resources.

International and local organizations support the government and the population in connecting habitats and protecting the species of this unique desert region.

Namibian landscapes are truly spectacular: desert areas stretching as far as the eye can see, wild Atlantic coastlines, dense forests, vast savannahs, and lush river ecosystems make this Southern African country truly unique. In such an environment, local and international organizations support the government and the population in connecting habitats and protecting species throughout the country.

Having elephants, lions, buffaloes, and hippos as neighbors is both a blessing and a challenge for Namibians living outside the country’s few urban centers. In a single night, elephants can devour an entire harvest and trample crops beyond recovery, while big cats can tear apart livestock: life is not easy here for those living in the villages. For this reason, many organizations and the government are committed to working not only for environmental protection, but also for the livelihoods of the Namibian people: the availability of alternative sources of income helps curb poaching. In addition, tourism revenue directly benefits local communities.

Thanks to this environmental protection policy, today 44% of the national territory (according to WWF) is protected or managed according to sustainable principles.
