Dream beaches, superstar elephants, daring train rides, and epic waves: Sri Lanka is the wildly amazing destination you need!
Want to take a proper break from a job more boring than a documentary about the history of tiles?

And no, I haven’t gone crazy: I’m about to give you six reasons that’ll have you packing your backpack before you even get to number six!

1. Fairytale beaches (and sunburn just around the corner if you forget sunscreen)
Forget those depressing coastlines where the only novelty is the smell of fried food and screaming children that make you want to swim far offshore just so you don’t have to hear them. In Sri Lanka, you’ll find beaches that look like postcards: sand as white as snow, crystal-clear sea reflecting your image and making you look even better (don’t worry, it’s not just the HD-clean water creating that effect!).
Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa, Tangalle are just some of the stunning beaches on this island—you’re spoiled for choice.
It’s all fantastic, but be careful: put your sunscreen on properly, or you’ll end up as red as a stuffed pepper with lobster!
2. Train journeys that make you say: “Okay, I might be risking my life, but who cares!”
You know those commuter trains packed with stressed-out people first thing in the morning?
Well, here it’s worse.
Taking the train in Sri Lanka is, let’s say, an “adventurous” experience. The famous train to Ella is so crowded that you often travel hanging out of the carriage, like a salami left to cure, under the excuse that “the view is better.” But trust me, it’s absolutely incredible. You feel a bit like a hero, a bit like an idiot for risking your life—but it’s worth it.
You cross tea plantations where the pickers look like little colorful confetti scattered across the green, and out the window you see landscapes that give you goosebumps.
And then there are the people, smiling at you as if you were their best childhood friend, and the street vendors trying to sell you everything, from spicy fritters that absolutely wreck your stomach to snacks wrapped in old newspaper pages (recycling is serious business here). Arriving in Ella, with that breathtaking view, makes you forget the two hours spent crushed tighter than you thought possible.
And if the sky is clear at night, they say you can even see the lighthouse on the coast!
3. Uda Walawe: the Sri Lankan savannah where elephants couldn’t care less who you are
Think an African-style safari is out of reach in Sri Lanka?
Try Uda Walawe National Park. You enter and feel like you’ve landed in a wildlife documentary, but without that voice-over explaining the mating habits of moths.
You’ll find massive buffalo, suspicious-looking crocodiles, and birds with unbelievable colors.
The elephants, though, are the real stars. Hundreds of pachyderms strolling around like kings and queens of their own home (which, to be fair, they are).
It almost makes you forget that one of them might charge at you without warning, but if that happens, at least you’ll have an epic story to tell your grandchildren (or the emergency room staff, depending on your luck).
4. Anuradhapura: home to a tree older than Grandpa Simpson
If you love history and ruins, Anuradhapura is a dream.
Ancient palaces, temples worn down by time, and the Sri Maha Bodhi tree, revered and incredibly ancient: older than your uncle’s Christmas jokes.
Riding a bicycle around these ruins is a strange but unmissable experience, trust me. And every now and then you come across a monk dressed in orange who looks like he stepped straight out of a martial arts film. A perfect mix of history, spirituality, and the fear of falling off your bike and breaking your neck.
5. Kandy: where one sacred tooth attracts more tourists than a celebrity influencer!
Kandy is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka, and its crown jewel is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth. Yes, you read that right—a tooth. Supposedly Buddha’s.
For the people of Sri Lanka, it’s something sacred you wouldn’t touch even with a stick; for tourists, it’s a chance to snap a photo and wonder whether it’s really worth standing in such a long line to see a tooth, as if it had personally bitten Dracula.
Besides the miraculous tooth, Kandy has a lovely lake where you can enjoy a romantic walk (or get pooped on by pigeons), plenty of museums (if you’re that kind of person, your call), and just outside town, some fantastic botanical gardens. In short, it’s a mix of culture, nature, and the mild confusion of seeing so many people devoted to a tooth.
6. The food: so spicy you’ll feel fireworks going off (but I won’t say where)
Food in Sri Lanka is explosive—in every sense! Rice and curry is the national dish, and every cook makes it their own, but that’s only the beginning.
There’s the “devilish” version of meat and fish with sweet-and-sour sauces that make you sweat like a radiator, and dosa, a kind of Indian flatbread filled with spicy vegetables (a little lighter, but still absolutely delicious!).
One small tip: skip the usual tourist spots and throw yourself into the little eateries where the locals actually eat. Try jackfruit curry (don’t ask what it is, just trust me and eat it), chicken stew that warms your soul (and gives you hiccups), and kottu, a sort of glorious mix of bread, vegetables, and meat that tastes like heaven (and may also bring about the end of your digestive system if you’ve got a sensitive stomach).
If you want to learn how to cook like a proper Sri Lankan, stop by Matey Hut, a small and simple little restaurant where they’ll teach you how to make rice and curry better than your grandma (assuming your grandma were Sri Lankan, of course).
