When to visit Costa Rica: a guide to the local climate

Between sun-soaked beaches and lush forests, understanding Costa Rica’s climate is essential for an unforgettable trip

Are you dreaming of a trip to Costa Rica? You’re probably already picturing stunning beaches, lush forests, and breathtaking volcanoes, right?

But wait a second—before you throw on your backpack, wouldn’t it be better to understand when the right time to go is?

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

We consulted expert meteorologists, talked to locals, and even watched a ton of documentaries about Costa Rica to give you the ultimate guide on when to visit this tropical paradise.

So, sit back and discover everything you need to know.

Let’s get started!

Costa Rica’s weather: a tropical puzzle

First of all, forget the four seasons you’re used to. Things work differently here in Costa Rica.

There are only two seasons: the dry season (called “verano,” or summer) and the rainy season (known as “invierno,” or winter).

But be careful—don’t let the names fool you! Costa Rican “summer” has very little to do with the one you know, and “winter” definitely won’t leave you shivering with cold.

Dry season: a sun-lover’s paradise

From December to April, Costa Rica turns into a true sunny paradise. It’s the perfect time if you want to work on your tan and enjoy the beaches without worrying about sudden downpours.

This is the ideal time for:

But there’s one small—or rather, HUGE—problem: everyone wants to come during this time. So get ready for:

Rainy season: the kingdom of green (and umbrellas)

From May to November, Costa Rica transforms into a giant tropical garden. Rain is frequent, especially in the afternoon, but don’t let that discourage you!

This time of year has its own charm:

But be careful:

Top destinations and when to visit them

Pacific Coast: a surfer’s paradise

If you’re into surfing (or just want to pretend you are to look cool), the Pacific coast is your place. Destinations like Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo, and Jacó are perfect during the dry season.

The best time? February! Stable weather, perfect waves, and... well, yes, still plenty of tourists. But you can’t have everything in life!

Caribbean Coast: unpredictable beauty

The Caribbean coast is like that slightly wild friend: unpredictable but always fun. Here, it rains a bit all year round, but who cares when you’ve got dreamy beaches and an authentic Caribbean atmosphere?

If you’re a nature lover, March and April are the perfect months to see sea turtles nesting. And if you want to avoid the rain on the Pacific side, come here during its dry season (which coincides with the Pacific’s wet season).

Brilliant, right?

Mountain Areas and Volcanoes: adventure awaits

If you’re more into trekking and adventure, mountainous areas like Monteverde and Arenal Volcano are your playground. During the dry season, the trails are less slippery (which means fewer chances of embarrassing yourself in front of other hikers).

But don’t underestimate the rainy season: cooler temperatures, fewer tourists, and even greener, more lush landscapes. Perfect if you want to feel like you’re in Jurassic Park (without the risk of being eaten by a T-Rex).

Events you shouldn’t miss

Costa Rica is not just about nature, but also culture and fun. Here are some events that could add a little extra spice to your trip:

Practical tips so you don’t mess up

  1. Avoid the crowds: If you hate crowds like we do, aim for May to November, especially September and October. Fewer tourists = more space to do whatever you feel like.
  2. Health and safety: Costa Rica is generally safe, but don’t play the hero. During the rainy season, some roads can turn into muddy ski slopes. And remember: sunscreen is your friend, always!
  3. Travel insurance: Get it. Seriously. Unless you want to spend all your savings on a medical emergency instead of cocktails and souvenirs. We include it in our itinerary!

In conclusion

So, when is the best time to go to Costa Rica?

The boring answer is: it depends on what you want to do. The fun answer is: ALWAYS! Whether under the blazing sun or a tropical downpour, Costa Rica always has something magical to offer.

And if all this talk about Costa Rica has made you want to leave right away, well, we’ve got a surprise for you! How about a 13-day tour that will take you to discover the very best of this tropical country?

Take a look at our itinerary and get ready to experience the adventure of a lifetime.

Pura vida, baby!
