Crowds at Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is one of the most incredible places we’ve seen in recent years. Now let us tell you about it...

As everyone knows, Machu Picchu is one of the 7 wonders of the modern world. What you should know is that the “7 wonders” were the result of a contest launched some time ago by a for-profit agency, which collected money to vote for an attraction. Voting was open, but some countries saw the opportunity and invested millions in advertising, since it was allowed to pay to vote more than once. If I’d had enough money back then, instead of just buying candy, even my appendix in a jar could have made it into the top 7.

Since the ranking was published, Machu Picchu has been flooded with billions of visitors. The train through the valley costs 90 dollars, and the bus that takes you from the village to the top costs 25 more. Tourism has certainly benefited the locals, who must have a good laugh watching people line up to take selfies with the view in the background.

As soon as we got to the top, we felt a bit embarrassed about the 1-dollar bathrooms after having paid 69 for the entrance ticket (booked 6 months in advance).

But then it became clear to all of us: Machu Picchu is an unforgettable sight, difficult to describe in words. It is set in a landscape unlike anywhere else and preserves a wonderful history. So yes, beyond all moral concerns, coming here is absolutely, truly worth it.
