See the Northern Lights in 2024. An unconventional guide!

Here you are, brave hunter of lights, eager to throw yourself into the arms of the cold for a chance to witness nature’s most fascinating phenomenon: the Northern Lights. So, you’ve decided to see the Northern Lights in 2024, huh? About time! By now, everyone has seen them except you (except you! Except you! Except yooou). We just hope you know what you’re getting yourself into.

In any case, don’t worry: when it comes to chasing and seeing the Northern Lights, we know our stuff, and we’ll guide you. Get ready for an unconventional guide to Northern Lights hunting—hopefully less useless than so many others you find around the web.

Come on then, title card and off we go: Hunting the Northern Lights in 2024

Chapter 1: When to go and see the Northern Lights

The first thing you should know is that the Northern Lights are not fast food you can order whenever you feel like it. You need to go at the right time, namely between September and March. Yes, you’ll have to deal with the cold. But think of the amazing photos you’ll be able to take... and share on Instagram!

If you’d like to dive deeper into the topic, we’ve written a nice little article dedicated to exactly when to see the Northern Lights

Chapter 2: Where to look for the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are not hanging out in the city center, my friend. You’ll need to venture into some of the coldest places on the planet, near or inside the Arctic Circle. Yes, we’re talking about Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Canada, and Alaska. Hope you don’t mind long flights!

Chapter 3: What time to see the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are not an employee working from 9 to 5. This lady likes to stay up late, so get ready to do the same. Usually, her show takes place between 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. Who needs sleep when there’s a sky to admire?

Chapter 4: What to bring to see the Northern Lights

Alright, you’ll need to put together a survival kit. Camera, tripod, spare battery, hat, gloves, snow boots, thermal socks, waterproof trousers, flashlight, snacks, a thermos of hot tea or hot chocolate, and a huge dose of patience. Yes, it sounds like a lot, but remember: it’s better to be overloaded than frozen!

Chapter 5: Seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland

If you’ve decided to chase the Northern Lights in Iceland, know that you’re not the only genius who had this idea. Still, there are less crowded places where you can enjoy the show. For example, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula or the Westfjords.
That’s why, if you want to get away from the total tourist chaos, we take you to spot them in exactly these remote places on our Iceland Tour. Told you we know our stuff.

Chapter 6: Seeing the Northern Lights in Norway

And then there’s Norway, land of the Vikings and Northern Lights that few people consider because everyone is so obsessed with Iceland. But hey, the Northern Lights are here too. Tromsø and Svalbard are popular, but Senja and Finnmark are also well worth a visit. If you want to join us on a trip to the Lofoten Islands, remember to bring your Viking beard. Or grow one.

Chapter 7: Seeing the Northern Lights in Lapland

Lapland is beautiful. Truly beautiful, and not yet overrun by tourists (so it’s worth taking advantage of that!). As beautiful as the Northern Lights you can spot there! On our Lapland Tour, we chase the Northern Lights every evening. And it’s awesome.

Chapter 8: Canada, huh?

Finally, Canada. This great country doesn’t just offer maple syrup, but fantastic Northern Lights too. Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut are your targets. And watch out for moose!

Conclusion

There you have it, fearless travelers! In this short unconventional guide to hunting the Northern Lights, we’ve covered a few useful points that should give you an idea of what to expect if you want to set off in 2024 in search of the Northern Lights. Remember: you’ll need patience and endurance! But in the end, you’ll see, it’ll be worth it.

Happy hunting and... may the cold be with you!
