In Jordan with UNHCR, a harrowing experience

Gabriele visited Jordan, the country’s second-largest refugee camp, which is home to around 40,000 people, together with the United Nations Refugee Protection Department.
Statistics and figures are available to everyone, but they are so vast that our minds struggle to fully grasp them.

So he tried to look beyond the numbers and tell their story…
In this refugee camp, almost half of the people do not exist. In other words, they are there, but officially they do not exist. Refugee camps are not recognized by the government, and since 2015 the census has remained fixed at 1 million inhabitants.

We were reflecting on the fact that if you do not exist, you cannot have a passport, you cannot have a bank account, you cannot study, you cannot do anything at all. And even worse, you cannot make your dreams come true. This shocked us.

There are people who are born without rights, without a country, without an identity.
No. This is absurd, it is unbelievable... and we cannot stand by and do nothing.
