Why go on safari in Kenya? 5 good reasons to enjoy a unique experience

Yes, good question: why go on safari in Kenya?
Our answer is: “Why not?”.
A destination rich in flora, fauna, and stunning nature reserves, Kenya offers countless reasons why it is worth visiting.

But since there are too many, and this article risked becoming endless, we’ll give you just 5.

From the Big Five to Africa’s most spectacular nature reserves: here’s why you should visit Kenya

1) Kenya is an excellent destination for Big Five safaris

Kenya is renowned as a Big Five destination (elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros, lion, and leopard), and it lives up to this reputation every time we visit. In fact, it is a particularly suitable destination both for first-time travelers and for more experienced African safari-goers.

Although it is the homeland of the Big Five, Kenya is not limited to that: what makes it special is its diversity of wildlife and species.

Look for the Samburu Five in Samburu, wild dogs in Laikipia, or the Big Tuskers in Amboseli: wildlife is abundant throughout Kenya, and the best way to enjoy its diversity is to combine different areas in your safari.

2) Kenya has a wonderful climate and is easy to visit (okay, that’s two reasons!)

The climate in Kenya is fantastic all year round!
Located on the equatorial belt, it enjoys a beautiful tropical climate.

But there’s more.
Thanks to its colonial ties, it has long been a favored destination for travelers and, since independence, has been considered one of the most stable countries in Africa.

What’s more, hospitality is a fundamental part of Kenyan culture, and you’ll notice it! Wherever you go, you’ll feel right at home.

3) Kenya offers a huge—really huge—variety of things to do!

From kayaking with elephants to walking with rhinos and jumping from waterfalls, from deep-sea fishing to water sports, Kenya truly offers a huge number of things to do, whether you are interested in spotting the black rhino or snorkeling with lionfish.

If, on the other hand, you are passionate about history, there are many archaeological sites and areas to visit that will leave you speechless.

But that’s not all.

Kenya is home to 43 major tribes, which makes it culturally impressive: in fact, it is possible to come into contact with the lifestyle and traditions of Kenyan tribes such as the Maasai and the Samburu.

As we mentioned earlier, the famous Maasai are among the friendliest and most hospitable people in all of Africa.
For lovers of flora and fauna, we simply must mention the Great Lakes in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, one of the country’s most popular attractions.
Their waters and shores are home to a wide variety of birds, such as flamingos, kingfishers, and pelicans.

In this regard, the diversity of the country’s parks and habitats makes birdwatching extremely rewarding, with large numbers of Palearctic migratory species between October and February. The plumage of many birds is truly spectacular and makes Kenya a paradise for bird lovers.

And that is why we cannot fail to devote a few lines to the Masai Mara National Reserve, made famous by several documentaries about the Great Wildebeest Migration and by the exceptionally high concentration of big cats in the reserve—especially lions—which is unmatched in the rest of the continent!

4) Doing animals a favor: by visiting Kenya, you help protect its wildlife

Many people do not realize that safaris help protect wildlife.
What do we mean? Yes, you understood correctly.

When you stay at a camp or lodge in Kenya, you pay a conservation fee for the species and the park itself, which goes toward conservation efforts such as anti-poaching activities.

5) Kenya is a fantastic destination with amazing safari accommodation

Kenya’s coast offers a combination of sea and beaches where you can easily forget the frenzy of everyday life and relax.

To put it clearly, you can spend the morning on safari searching for Kenya’s incredible wildlife and then sip a cocktail on the beach at sunset (what a treat!).

With direct flights between the Maasai Mara and Kenya’s south coast (Diani), this is a very popular combination; but don’t forget the beaches of Lamu, farther off the beaten track: by flying from Mara Airport to Nairobi Wilson and then to Lamu, you have another great option.

But that’s not all.

For those looking for a little more culture and history, it is possible to explore Lamu Old Town, spend your days relaxing on the beach, or enjoy a wide variety of water sports.
