Trekking in Topes de Collantes, Cuba: here’s why it’s worth it...

What is Topes de Collantes?

First of all, for those of you who have never heard of Topes de Collantes (yes, we’re looking at you!), it’s a natural park located in Cuba’s Escambray Mountains. The name also refers to the third-highest peak in the reserve, where a small settlement and tourist center are located, all sharing the same name. Think of it as the green, muscular heart of Cuba, beating to the rhythm of salsa and rum...

How long is the trek?

Topes de Collantes Natural Park is home to caves, rivers, valleys, waterfalls, and cliffs. This Cuban natural gem began gaining importance in the late 1930s, when one of the country’s presidents ordered a building to be constructed there for his wife to live in, as she was in poor health. For many years now, efforts have been made to preserve and protect this wonderful treasure. It is a must-visit for anyone who enjoys hiking, photography, or simply loves nature and animals.
Topes de Collantes has more flora and fauna than you can imagine (you can even come across 100 different animal species). Its main natural attractions are Vegas Grandes and Salto del Caburní, two of the park’s most famous waterfalls. The trail to reach the waterfall takes just over 30–40 minutes! But the main highlight? The views. Oh, the views. From breathtaking vistas to deep gorges, every time you think you’ve reached the peak of beauty, Topes tells you: "Wait, there’s more!"

Why should you go trekking in Topes de Collantes?

There are several reasons, but above all, there’s the chance to enjoy Free Fitness: who needs a gym when you’ve got Topes? The hills here are no joke, and your legs will thank you... later. Or there’s the idea of taking a Natural Swim: forget luxury spas. A dip in one of the park’s hidden waterfalls will make you feel like a brand-new person.

Conclusion

So, if you’re looking for an experience that combines natural beauty and physical activity, Topes de Collantes is the place for you. For example, we visit it (totally by chance, of course...) during our Cuba itinerary, designed to help you discover all the coolest highlights of the country. Take a look!
