Traveling in Iceland: very useful practical tips

Have you ever heard that story about the Chinese traveler who got stuck inside Skaftafell? Or the Portuguese one who mistook the Ring Road for the sequel to The Lord of the Rings?

You hear absurd stories happening in Iceland all the time, mainly because people don’t know how to travel in Iceland.
But here at Sto Gran Tour, after putting our skills to the test by leaving a few of our own behind here and there, and carefully assessing every variable and their resistance to the cold, we’ve become real experts—and a little know-it-all too. So here goes...

Practical tips for traveling in Iceland

How do you travel around Iceland? How do you get from place to place? In this article you’ll find some practical tips that will help you travel safely in Iceland. We’re talking about safety because one of the first things to know about Iceland is that on this island, the storms are in charge. No matter the season: whether it’s winter or summer, the risk of snowstorms or rainstorms with heavy sea swells is always high and should never be underestimated.

Even though most of us are used to doing things our own way when we travel and planning our own great itineraries, in Iceland you’re required to follow the laws of nature. For this reason, to tackle winter in Iceland—and therefore travel as well and as safely as possible—we decided to create a system that allows us to predict all kinds of storms, dodge them, and sometimes even surf them!

Before even going to the bathroom in the morning, the SGT Team wakes up and checks whether a volcano has erupted in Iceland by monitoring which alerts are active across the country: https://safetravel.is/

Okay. After that, we move on to checking road conditions: http://www.vegagerdin.is/

Last but not least, the weather: https://www.vedur.is/

With these simple—but by no means obvious—steps, the Team takes you around Iceland without missing a beat.
