What to see in Botswana: 5 places you absolutely can’t miss

Are you thinking about going to Botswana but aren’t sure what you’d like to visit once you arrive in one of the most beautiful countries in the world?

You’ve come to the right place.

By reading this article, you’ll discover some of Botswana’s must-see places and how to make the most of this experience.

Here are five places to visit in Botswana that you may not have thought about

#1 Safari in Chobe National Park

Botswana is probably one of the best safari destinations—if not the very best—in the world. Truly.

There are many national parks to choose from, but Chobe National Park is considered one of the very best.

Chobe lies near the borders with Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It is huge and includes several different areas, among them the more remote Savuti and Linyanti regions (a private reserve). However, most people tend to visit the Riverfront area because of its location near the town of Kasane, as well as Livingstone (Zambia) and Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe).

#2 Visit the Okavango Delta

What’s the point of going to Botswana if you don’t stop by the Okavango Delta? A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of the most unique landscapes in the world.

The Okavango Delta region is also home to two fantastic safari destinations, Moremi Game Reserve and the Khwai Concession, both reachable by road from Maun.

The area also borders Chobe National Park and is home to the Big Five, so wildlife sightings are practically guaranteed!

#3 Makgadikgadi Pans, a salt pan of surreal beauty

Another place of otherworldly beauty is the Makgadikgadi Pans, the largest salt pans in the world. Located in the middle of the arid savannah of northeastern Botswana, they are the remains of a huge lake that dried up thousands of years ago.

The pans are flat and barren, with a horizon that seems to go on forever. Camping safaris to spot zebras, wildebeest, and their predators are a great option for more adventurous travelers.

#4 Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve covers about 4,871 km² (70% of which is part of the Okavango Delta) and is considered one of the most beautiful wildlife reserves in Africa, as it combines mopane woodlands and acacia forests, wetlands covered with water lilies, floodplains, and lagoons.

Moremi consists of a network of waterways surrounding two large islands: Chief’s Island to the west and Mopane Tongue to the east. In this unspoiled area, birdlife is abundant and varied, with more than 500 species ranging from water birds to forest dwellers.

There are also many species of ducks, geese, and herons. Since Moremi is a fenced reserve, wildlife viewing is remarkable all year round. Elephants are numerous, especially during the dry season, as are buffalo, giraffes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, hyenas, jackals, and the full range of antelope species.

#5 Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a vast unspoiled wilderness, a hypnotic desert landscape of dry riverbeds, towering red dunes, and fossil valleys.

It stretches across 38,000 km between South Africa and Botswana and was created by the two countries in 1999, becoming the world’s first transfrontier park. The reserve is home to a large number of prey animals, including antelope and wildebeest. This, in turn, attracts the predators travelers hope to see: lions, hyenas, leopards, and a healthy population of cheetahs.
