The 5 things not to miss if you're traveling to Thailand

Imagine walking through the streets of Bangkok, a city that seems suspended between the past and the present. Ancient temples stand beside modern shopping malls, while Buddhist monks and patrons of Patpong’s red-light district share the same space.

It is a fascinating contrast, a chaotic and exotic setting that enchants visitors.

But this is only a small part of what Thailand has to offer travelers.

In this article, we will explore five unmissable destinations in the Land of Smiles that will give you a truly unique experience.

From bustling Bangkok to the peace of Phraya Nakhon Cave: a guide to Thailand’s must-see places

#1 Bangkok

Travelers often find it difficult to define Bangkok’s personality. Most first-time visitors see it as a city halfway between the past and the present.

Ancient temples and modern shopping malls make up Thailand’s capital, while Buddhist monks and the regulars of Patpong (Bangkok’s red-light district) share the city streets.

The contrast can create an exhilarating yet chaotic atmosphere.

That said, Bangkok’s dynamic environment requires a lot of energy. The constantly hot weather and the persistent crowds can take their toll on unprepared visitors.

Of course, the city seems to boil over with everything from humidity to humanity, but it is precisely this exotic abundance that fascinates anyone who visits.

Here you will find the largest open-air market in the world, a world-class aquarium housed inside an eight-story shopping mall, a 15-meter-tall golden Buddha statue, and much more.

#2 Khao Sok National Park

Home to limestone cliffs, impressive waterfalls, and the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world, Khao Sok is an area incredibly rich in biodiversity.

It is home to around 200 types of flora and many different animal species, including tigers, elephants, and southern pig-tailed macaques.

The park experiences heavy rainfall throughout the year, so for a better chance of staying dry, plan your visit during the dry season, which runs from December to April.

#3 Ko Samui

Home to five-star resorts, an incredible nightlife, and some of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand, the island of Ko Samui has something to offer everyone.

When you are not relaxing on the white sand, visit an elephant sanctuary or explore ancient temples such as Wat Plai Laem and Wat Phra Yai, also known as the Big Buddha Temple.

Finally, leave some time for a day trip to the nearby Ang Thong Marine Park, an archipelago of 42 islands that can be reached by speedboat.

#4 Ayutthaya, capital of the Kingdom of Siam

When Thailand was known as the Kingdom of Siam, Ayutthaya was its capital.

This powerful ancient city was destroyed during a conflict with another Asian kingdom, but you can still see the majestic remains of its imposing temples. Today, the ancient city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular day trip from Bangkok.

Visiting Ayutthaya is one of the most important things to do in Thailand, and booking a tour ensures that you learn all about the fascinating history of the ancient capital.

#5 Phraya Nakhon Cave

Phraya Nakhon Cave is a limestone cave located in Sam Roi Yot National Park.

Many decades ago, part of the cave’s roof collapsed, exposing its interior to some of the most stunning morning light imaginable.

This allowed plants and even trees to grow inside.

The cave was discovered by chance 200 years ago by its namesake, Chao Phraya Nakhon Sri Thammarat, a Thai man seeking shelter from the rain.

At the end of the 19th century, the small temple was built to honor a visit by King Rama V.

The Kukha Karuhas Pavilion is the smallest temple in Thailand and was built without the use of screws or nails—amazing, isn’t it? It is a special piece of craftsmanship, with the wood worked in such a way that it fits together perfectly.

The temple and cave are at their most beautiful in the winter months, between December and March, at around 10:30 in the morning. During this time, the morning light is at its finest and shines directly onto the temple.
