Madeira’s weather is a little predictable—and that’s exactly why we love it

The island where it’s always spring isn’t a fairy tale—it’s Madeira.

The weather here is so pleasant that you might start wondering whether to plan a short trip or move here for good. Here’s what to expect in every season.

Winter

Winter in Madeira hardly feels like winter at all.

During this season, daytime temperatures hover around 19–20°C, while nights cool down to 13–14°C. In short, it’s the perfect climate for anyone wanting to escape the continental cold without dealing with a harsh seaside winter.

That said, there’s something for snow lovers too: the island’s mountains, such as Pico Ruivo, offer conditions a little closer to a more classic winter atmosphere.

Spring

Spring in Madeira is when the island truly shows off. Daytime temperatures range from 20–22°C, with cool nights between 13–17°C.

During these months, the island’s flora is lush and spectacular, so much so that in May the capital, Funchal, celebrates the Flower Festival. It’s one of the most beautiful times of year to visit.

Summer

In summer, daytime temperatures range between 22–26°C, with mild nights between 17–19°C and excellent weather for outdoor activities and hiking, without the fear of unbearable heat. And while the local climate may at times feel almost tropical, unlike many tropical destinations, summer here doesn’t usually bring sudden heavy downpours. In other words, you can expect mostly dry days.

Autumn

Autumn in Madeira is marked by pleasant temperatures between 22–25°C during the day and 15–19°C at night. However, humidity begins to rise toward the end of September, bringing more rain from October through December. It’s never excessive, but packing an umbrella is still a good idea.

All in all, Madeira really is the island of eternal spring: whether you want to escape the winter chill, admire the flowers in spring, enjoy the summer sun, or experience a mild and slightly wetter autumn, the climate is always inviting, making it a perfect destination year-round.

The many things to do in Madeira: trekking, canyoning, and so much more

This little slice of paradise in the middle of the Atlantic—the kind of place that makes you wonder, “Why didn’t I come here sooner?”—offers much more than just sun and sea.

It also offers a whole range of activities that will help you forget about work, daily stress, and everything else back home.

Let’s start with the levadas, trekking routes that take you through the island’s lush vegetation by following the historic water channels built in the 16th century. These hikes are spectacular all year round, but in spring and autumn they are especially enjoyable thanks to the mild weather.

If you prefer water to dry land, summer is your season. Water activities at sea and along the rivers, such as canyoning—one of the island’s most exciting experiences—and boat tours, are especially popular. Water temperatures reach 23°C, making it ideal for a refreshing swim.

And then there’s the culture.

Beyond its natural beauty, Madeira’s history and culture are fascinating. You can discover them by visiting the island’s many museums, such as the Madeira Story Centre in Funchal, an interactive museum that tells the story of the archipelago.

And for an extra touch of flavor—quite literally—there’s Blandy’s Wine Lodge, where you can explore two hundred years of Madeira wine history.

Wine and history together: a truly unforgettable combination.

And of course, we can’t leave out the food.

In spring and summer, Madeira’s local festivals are full of delicious specialties such as espetada (meat skewers) and bolo do caco, the island’s traditional bread—distinctive, authentic, and absolutely delicious.

Every season brings a celebration: events not to miss in Madeira

Madeira is famous for its cultural events and festive celebrations held throughout the year. Let’s take a look at what this small island has to offer—because there always seems to be a good reason to celebrate here.

Flower Festival

Every May, the streets of Funchal turn into a riot of color with parades of flower-decorated floats, creating an explosion of beauty and fragrance. One of the most iconic parts of the celebration is the “Wall of Hope.”

Never heard of it?

It’s a truly special tradition: a real wall built by Madeira’s children using thousands of flowers, symbolizing universal peace.

Wine Festival

September is the month of wine. And what could be better than celebrating the grape harvest with even more wine?

There are endless tastings, folk performances, and harvest-related activities. It’s the perfect time to experience Madeira’s wine culture at its liveliest.

Madeira Carnival

This is the time when everyone dresses up and the streets come alive.

Allegorical parades, costume parties, and performances fill the streets of Funchal, creating an energetic and joyful atmosphere that invites everyone to join in the fun.

It’s one more great excuse to celebrate.
