You are in Nepal, immersed in one of the most magical places on the planet. But there is one dilemma: when is the best time to enjoy this unique experience?
It is a question many travelers ask, and in this article we will try to provide you with a detailed guide to choosing the perfect time to visit the Nepalese Himalayas and make your trip unforgettable.
When is the best time to go to Nepal? A month-by-month guide
Which are the best months to visit Nepal?
Outside the summer monsoon season — from June to August — Nepal enjoys consistently favorable weather and is therefore an excellent destination to visit all year round.
Between the high season and the end of the monsoon, mid-September is an excellent time to visit Nepal if you want to:
- avoid the peak tourist season;
- enjoy excellent weather.
Once the main tourist season is over, the months from December to May remain a great time to visit Nepal. Between March and May, temperatures rise, making this time of year excellent for trekking in the Himalayas.
As we mentioned earlier, the monsoon season is certainly not a favorable time.
Heavy rain and widespread landslides make traveling around the country difficult, and many tourist facilities close for the entire period.

Climate information for southern Nepal (Chitwan National Park)
The best time to visit Chitwan National Park is between November and February, with pleasant temperatures and almost no rainfall.
Early November marks the beginning of the cooler months in the southern plains of Nepal, with daytime temperatures of around 25°C. The newly formed waterholes provide an excellent opportunity to see a high concentration of wildlife, including migratory birds.
Temperatures remain steady from November through January, the coolest month, which is ideal for walking in the park and spotting animals.
The best time for wildlife viewing in Chitwan is from late January onward, when local people cut the grass and it becomes much easier to spot animals from a distance.
From March to May, temperatures rise quickly in southern Nepal, with averages that reach 35°C in May.
March and April in Chitwan usually remain dry, but the rainy season in southern Nepal begins in May: in fact, the number of rainy days rises from 7 in April to 19 in May.
As in the rest of Nepal, the approach of the monsoon causes humidity levels to rise (around 65%!).
As in the rest of the country, the summer months bring huge amounts of rain: the monsoon arrives in Nepal and rainfall peaks in July, with an average of 650 mm.
Early September is marked by heavy rainfall in the south, especially if there is a late monsoon that year. Most of the time, the second half of the month is characterized by clearer skies that can offer excellent conditions.
During these two months, average temperatures remain around 20°C, although some cooler days can occur in October, with nighttime temperatures sometimes dropping to 10°C.

Visitors flock to the Annapurna region in October and November to make the most of what is certainly the best trekking season.
Temperatures are pleasant but not hot, averaging 14°C in October and dropping to around 10°C in November. It is worth keeping in mind that, although the days are pleasant, nighttime temperatures can fall to around freezing.
In Ghandruk, there is a small amount of rain at the beginning of October, but in November you can expect ideal conditions in the Annapurna region, with clear skies offering incredible views of the surrounding mountains.
The period from December to February is definitely the coldest time of year, with average daytime temperatures hovering around 8°C.
March, April, and May are the best months to visit Ghandruk and the Annapurna region, as temperatures begin to rise and the snow starts to melt.
Average temperatures in March are around 12°C and rise steadily to an average of 17°C in May. During this time there is a slight increase in rainfall as the monsoon approaches, although this relatively low amount will have minimal impact on a visit to the Annapurna Conservation Area.
The world-famous rhododendrons and other Himalayan flowers come to life with the onset of May rains, making this the best time to visit the Annapurna region from a botanical point of view.
Finally, early June and late September tend to avoid the worst of the monsoon, but the rest of this period guarantees a large amount of rain, peaking in July with around 700 mm.

Weather information for the Kathmandu Valley (Kathmandu)
January is the coldest month in Kathmandu, with average daytime temperatures of 8°C, which can drop to freezing at night.
Average rainfall during this period is negligible, with an average of one rainy day per month. If you are ready to brave the cold, January is certainly a good time to visit Nepal, with almost perfect visibility, meaning this is one of the best times to see the Langtang mountain range from the city.
Temperatures begin to rise throughout February and March, with averages of around 10°C in February and 18°C in March. Visibility remains extremely good throughout this period, and the slightly warmer temperatures make March an ideal time to enjoy everything the Kathmandu Valley has to offer.
In April, the warmest season in Nepal begins, with average temperatures reaching 20°C in the capital and often exceeding 25°C during the hottest hours of the day.
Clouds and rain are still very rare events, which means Kathmandu’s weather in April is almost perfect. Temperatures continue to rise in May, with daytime temperatures regularly reaching 20°C.
While the months leading up to May are almost completely dry, by the end of the month rainfall in the Kathmandu Valley tends to increase. However, the increase is minimal and should not affect a trip during this time.
The summer months in Nepal (from June to August) are dominated by the annual monsoon, with daily rainfall. At the height of the monsoon, which occurs in July, there is generally around 350 mm of rain. During these months, landslides are frequent and getting around the country becomes particularly challenging.
Although the rainiest period comes to an end in September, rain is still quite frequent in the first half of the month, with an average of around 150 mm of rain. From October onward, rain ceases to be a problem, with a sharp drop to 37 mm in October and just 2 mm in December.
