Where is Lapland located?

Land of the Sámi, northern lights, and the midnight sun, Lapland is undoubtedly one of those journeys to take if you dream of being just a stone’s throw from the Arctic Circle. It awaits you—but do you know exactly where Lapland is located?

If you are planning your trip to Lapland but are not sure where it is, this article will help clear things up and give you a better understanding of this remote region, characterized by the presence of the Sámi people.

Where is Lapland located?

The first important truth to know is that Lapland is not a country, but a geographical region stretching from Norway to Russia, also crossing Sweden and Finland. When people talk about Lapland, they often mainly refer to Finnish Lapland, but Swedish, Norwegian, and Russian Lapland are also part of the map of Lapland.

However, Finnish Lapland undoubtedly remains the best known and the one most easily associated with the idea of snow and the northern lights. Contributing to this poetic image is also the presence in Rovaniemi of Santa Claus Village, a popular destination for families.

What is the capital of Lapland?

Since it is not a country, and setting aside nationalist borders in favor of social boundaries and the preservation of the history and traditions of the Sámi people, Lapland does not have a capital. The main city of reference for political matters is Rovaniemi, which is located in Finland, but in Inari (also in Finland), as well as in Norway and Sweden, there are also “Sámi Parliaments.”

A trip to Lapland means discovering a new and unique world, where icy winters turn into pure magic. You can touch a reindeer, sleep in an igloo, drive a snowmobile, and feel as though you are on the roof of Europe. You can experience this mix of emotions on our Lapland Tour.
