Visiting Monument Valley: how to plan a tour to one of the iconic places of the Far West

Okay, you googled “visit Monument Valley” and ended up on this article (very nice).

However, you still don’t have a clear idea of what to expect (not so nice). But that’s exactly why we’re here!

In this article, we’ll look at the best time to visit the site, some of the most famous points of interest, and why you should choose an organized tour – which is much more than just an organized tour.

Monument Valley: how to enjoy this experience to the fullest on a road trip tour

Best time to visit Monument Valley

Monument Valley is open and can be visited all year round – except on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day – and each season naturally comes with both pros and cons, as you would expect, but nothing that would keep you from enjoying the beauty of the site.

The best seasons are spring and fall because the milder temperatures make the visit much more pleasant.

Summer, the time of year when there are the most travelers, can be very hot, so you’ll need to take the usual precautions (after all, we are in the desert – we couldn’t exactly expect a constant 77°F / 25°C with a light breeze).

That said, let’s take a look at some of the main attractions you shouldn’t miss.

Ready?

Ten (+one👍🏻) top attractions in Monument Valley you can’t miss

1) The Mittens and Merrick Butte

These three sandstone buttes form one of the most famous landscapes in the world, the true symbol of Monument Valley; it’s impossible to miss them, as they are close to the visitor center and The View Hotel.

2) Elephant Butte

One of the many gigantic and unusual rock formations in this park. Its name comes from the fact that it is said to resemble an elephant.

Seeing is believing.

3) Three Sisters

These are three slender and rather distinctive spires that stand out among the much thicker and denser buttes of the surrounding landscape.

4) John Ford’s Point

A truly scenic area dedicated to the director who immortalized Monument Valley as a Hollywood symbol of the Wild West. Here, if you want, you can even take a photo on horseback, just like John Wayne. Be careful not to miss this spot because it is not well signposted.

While driving along Valley Drive, near Camel Butte (on your left), you’ll come to a fork. Instead of continuing on the main road, turn right. You’ll arrive at a clearing with a few shops, where you can see John Ford’s Point.

But after all, you don’t need to worry about getting lost around the site: we’ve already taken care of everything!

5) Camel Butte

This is a large, complex, and striking rock formation, nicknamed the ‘camel’s hump.’

6) Rain God Mesa

This magnificent rock formation sits in the center of the valley and stands out for its size and grandeur.

7-8) Totem Pole

The unusual spires of Totem Pole offer some of the most beautiful views in Monument Valley. Don’t miss them!

9) Artist’s Point

Another unmissable viewpoint, where the horizon seems to fade into the scenery.

10) North Window

North Window is the ideal place for a panoramic view of the valley from the north.

11) The Thumb

This is another unusual standalone monolith and a recognizable landmark along the route.

Monument Valley: better on your own or with an organized tour?🤔

We won’t sugarcoat it: of course you can visit Monument Valley on your own. No one is stopping you.

In fact, that’s not really the point.

There are, however, a few things worth considering. We know that many of you might raise an eyebrow when you hear the words ‘tour operator’ – wow, that does sound a bit old-school!

And in fact, why should you give it a try? Just because everything is already organized and you won’t have to stress over planning the trip? Just because all you have to do is pack your backpack and go?

Not only that. Of course.

The real point is to live a different kind of experience (especially if you usually travel independently), together with a group of people who want to go on an adventure and step out of their comfort zone.

In fact, we’re not promising a trip focused on luxury and comfort: if that’s what you’re looking for, you’re in the wrong place.

At Sto Gran Tour, we organize adventure trips, group trips, and road trips for those who want to enjoy incredible and original experiences.
