Welcome to the most heavenly Hell there is! With Timon, Pumbaa, geothermal power plants, and the Maasai
Today I’m taking you for a little trip to a place so absurd it looks like it came straight out of a psychedelic dream. I’m talking about Hell’s Gate National Park in Kenya—a name that already says it all, doesn’t it?
You’d expect flames, pitchfork-wielding devils, and people screaming in despair, but instead... instead you find zebras grazing peacefully and tourists cycling around. That gives you the idea, right?
Just to be clear, this park isn’t the kind of place where you only drive around in a car with that stuffed-tourist stare: here you can ride a bike, go trekking, climb rock columns that look like petrified dinosaurs, and even pitch a tent at campsites near those big softies, the buffalo.

So where the heck is this Hell’s Gate?
Hell’s Gate sits happily in the Rift Valley, near Lake Naivasha. Let’s say it’s about a couple of hours by car from Nairobi, which, translated from Kenyan, means “it could be two, it could be six, depending on how motivated your driver is to dodge potholes the size of black holes.”
Mind-blowing landscapes: no magic mushrooms involved!
Here you’ve got a riot of red rocks rising into the sky, deep gorges that look like cracks made by a giant, and stone towers defying gravity while basically thumbing their nose at Newton.
Fischer’s Tower and Central Tower, just to name a couple, are so iconic that if you don’t take a picture there, it’s like going to a rave and asking them to play an Albano song!
And then there’s Hell’s Gate Gorge, a gorge that makes you feel like you’ve landed on another planet. In short, it’s a real feast for the eyes—the kind of place that makes you want to quit your office job and become a hermit in the middle of all this wonder.
Wildlife that will make your day (or end it quickly, depending on the lions)
Okay, let’s be honest: this isn’t the Maasai Mara, where rhinos honk at you if you don’t move out of the way. Still, the wildlife here is no joke either.
Lions, leopards, and cheetahs are around, even if you probably won’t find them having breakfast on your camping table.
But just imagine the thrill of pedaling along on a bike and maybe spotting a lion dozing a few meters away.
Pure adrenaline!
And then there are zebras, eland, Thomson’s gazelles, and ostriches running around like maniacs...
A real open-air zoo, except the animals aren’t behind bars and, if things go badly, you’re the one who’ll wish for protective custody...
And if you’re into birdwatching, you should know there are more than 100 bird species here, including lammergeier vultures, which are about as rare as plumbers on a Sunday.
Activities for every taste: even for the weirdos who want to hug baboons
The great thing about Hell’s Gate is that you don’t have to stay shut inside a 4x4 taking telephoto shots. Here you can walk, go cycling, try motorbiking (just try not to flip over into the gorges, okay?), and even camp, fully aware that the only thing separating you from predators is a piece of fabric and your faith in luck.
An experience for the truly tough!
And if you love a thrill, you can also go rock climbing, scaling cliff faces that look like they came straight out of Jurassic Park.
In short, there’s something for everyone.
The Lion King basically moved in here (definitely cheaper than Milan!)
If the landscape feels vaguely familiar, you’re not going crazy. Remember "The Lion King"?
Well, the creators of the film took a little trip around here to find inspiration. The rocks, the gorges... it feels like the “Pride Lands”!
So if you’re a fan of the movie, coming here is a bit like making a pilgrimage to a sacred place. You may not find Timon, Pumbaa, and the gang, but the atmosphere is absolutely there—guaranteed!
Olkaria: when nature meets the power company (and the watts start flowing!)
And now comes the wildest part of all. In the middle of this natural spectacle, what do you find?
Geothermal power plants!
Yes, you read that right: steam blasted up from the earth’s depths is harnessed to produce electricity. It’s an incredible contrast between the power of nature and human ingenuity.
The Olkaria plants were the first of their kind in Africa and, let’s be honest, it does feel a bit surreal seeing them pop up among rocks and zebras.

The Maasai Cultural Center: think you don’t care? You’ll change your mind!
If you have a bit of time left between a hike and a bike ride, stop by the Maasai Cultural Center. Here you’ll learn something about the culture and traditions of the Maasai, a proud and fascinating people who have lived in these lands for centuries.
You’ll discover they don’t spend their days only jumping around and drinking blood and porridge (okay, maybe a little), but that they also have a rich history and an incredibly deep cultural heritage. And let’s face it, pretending to be interested in the local culture looks pretty cool—especially when you tell your friends about it later with a classy documentary soundtrack in the background.
All in all, Hell’s Gate is an amazing park. A fantastic place where wild nature meets human madness.
And if all this has made you want to drop everything and head off on an adventure, well, just know that Sto Gran Tour has a 13-day trip to Kenya waiting for you. And who knows—maybe we’ll run into each other right at Hell’s Gate, ready to snap a photo with a zebra (or run from a hungry lion, depending on your point of view!).
