Jordan and the Dead Sea: did you know that...

Here are 8 interesting facts about Jordan’s most famous sea that isn’t really a sea:

Interesting facts about the Dead Sea, the sea that isn’t a sea

1) DEAD SEA LAKE

This body of water is called a sea, but it is actually a lake. It is called a “sea” because of its large size and because its waters are extremely salty.

2) DOWN BELOW

It is the lowest point on Earth, located about 400 meters below sea level.

3) THE SALTIEST

The water of the Dead Sea cannot flow out and can only evaporate. For this reason, its volume does not increase, and when the water evaporates, the mineral salts remain in the basin, making this lake the saltiest in the world. Its salinity is almost 10 times higher than that of any ocean!

4) YOU FLOAT

In the Dead Sea, you can lie back and float without much effort. This incredible buoyancy is due to the water’s high salinity!

5) AN ENDANGERED LAKE

There are fears that the Dead Sea could disappear in less than 40 years. In recent years, the water level has dropped significantly. However, researchers have been working to find effective solutions to raise the lake’s level again. The most promising idea is to create a link with the Red Sea, a project still in the planning stage that could save this body of water.

6) WHY IT’S CALLED DEAD

It is called the Dead Sea because, due to its very high salinity, life inside its waters is impossible!

7) SLOW COOKING

We’ve established that there’s a lot of salt. So it is best not to stay in the Dead Sea for more than 15 minutes, or your skin could feel like it is “cooking.”

8) BETTER THAN VICKS VAPORUB

This lake is a kind of natural health retreat. Many people suffering from various conditions, such as rheumatism or asthma, visit this enormous salt lake for natural mud treatments. The minerals in the water and the low concentration of allergens in the atmosphere create conditions that are highly beneficial for health.

The Dead Sea is just one of Jordan’s countless wonders. Not even an endless number of articles would be enough to tell them all. One thing is certain, though: discovering them in person is even better! Take a look at our JORDAN TOUR.
