Best time to go on a safari in Africa

If you’re looking for information to understand when to go on safari in Africa and make sure you travel in the right season, this article will help clear things up.
Let’s start with the basics: Africa! We’re talking about a huuuuge continent. People often refer to Africa as if it were a single country, governed by the same climate patterns everywhere. We believe this is a mistake: each country has its own seasonality, each park has its own migration patterns, and as a result, a safari season may be excellent in one country and less ideal in another.

This introduction is essential before looking in detail at the different national parks where you can go on safari and the best time to visit each one.

Safari in Africa: when to go?

Given the vast size of the African continent, almost every month of the year is suitable for a safari. If you want to travel during the winter months, between December and March, you should focus on Kenya, Tanzania, or Uganda. If, on the other hand, you want to travel in summer, between April and September, South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia are the best destinations. And in fact, take a look at our African Safaris to see the distribution of departures and the different safaris available.

But! There are some exceptions: to witness the great wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara (a park in Kenya), for example, the best months are July, August, or September. For some parks in Tanzania, however, the peak of the dry season is reached in October, and this is the best time to spot large numbers of animals. November, on the other hand, is perfect for the north of the country, when animals migrate toward the plains of the Serengeti along the border with Kenya.

So?! What is the best time for a safari in Africa?

In summary, the best time for a safari in Africa is from July to October, during the dry season and winter, when temperatures are mild.
