From Komodo dragons to outrageously expensive “poop coffee,” via bubbling volcanoes and insane diving
Ready to have your mind blown by Indonesia? Get set for stuff that will make you say, “What the hell?!”
We’re talking about wildly unusual animals (flippered and otherwise!), volcanoes huffing like pressure cookers, and coffee that, before ending up in your cup, took a little trip through an animal’s intestines (and yes, it came out the other end too. Yep, exactly there).
Brace yourself: here are the 6 weirdest facts about Indonesia!

1. Tigers, dragons, and pocket-sized buffalo: the wild spectacle of life in Indonesia
Indonesia isn’t a country, it’s a live Mother Nature show with special effects that make Hollywood look like a puppet theater. Biodiversity here isn’t just abundant: it’s an explosion of life that smacks you in the face with how little you really know about the world.
Sumatran tigers are the embodiment of “do not disturb,” with the stare of creatures that ruled the island long before humans showed up.
Then there are the Komodo dragons, which don’t breathe fire, but make up for it with jaws that could crunch a wild boar for breakfast.
And let’s not forget the Javan rhinos, animals so rare that spotting one is like witnessing a miracle… except they weigh two tons.
Not enough?
Indonesia also pulls out its “adorable” arsenal. Orangutans, staring at you like old friends; the tarsier, with its huge eyes; and the anoa, a miniature buffalo that looks like a comedy sketch, except it’s completely real.
But the real plot twist is in the numbers. Indonesia makes up just 1% of the Earth’s land area, yet it is home to 10% of the world’s plant species, 12% of its mammals, and 17% of its birds. The forests teem with life, the mountains crawl with creatures, and even the waters are so alive it feels like everything wants to leap out just to be noticed.
In short, Indonesia is the biodiversity handbook written in giant capital letters. Everything here is extreme, incredible, and so overwhelmingly real that it leaves you standing there with your jaw wide open.
2. “Unity in diversity” (even in the chaos)
Picture an apartment building with 300 families speaking 500 different languages. Now multiply that by an entire nation. That’s Indonesia, with its 300 ethnic groups! Basically a bigger mess than a family Christmas lunch, with everyone arguing in dialects that sound completely alien.
And each group has its own customs and traditions, especially when it comes to food! Honestly, it’s enough to make your head spin.
But don’t worry: there’s one official language, Bahasa Indonesia, which acts like the glue holding everything together.
Still, don’t assume it’ll be easy to learn!
3. More volcanoes than you can count
If you love living dangerously, Indonesia is the place for you. With 150 active volcanoes, this country doesn’t mess around. The ground shakes so often here that people are used to it. “Oh, another tremor? Pass the satay!”
Among the most famous are Krakatoa, whose 1883 eruption was so huge it was heard across great distances, and Tambora, which managed to alter the global climate for an entire year.
Oh, and one more thing: pack a face mask, just in case.
4. Coffee made from poop? Yes, please!
At this point your internal what-on-earth-is-going-on? meter might be short-circuiting.
There’s a coffee called Kopi Luwak that’s considered one of the rarest and most expensive in the world. But there’s a catch. Before reaching your espresso cup, the beans pass… through the intestines of a small animal called a civet. Yes, you read that right.
The civet eats the coffee cherries, its stomach gives them a kind of “natural marination,” and voilà: out comes a bean with a smooth, sweet flavor. But be warned: a single cup can cost up to 50 euros. For that kind of money, you could probably buy a moka pot and the civet too.
5. Scream-worthy diving (literally!)
You know the song from The Little Mermaid, “Under the sea, under the sea…”? Well, in Indonesia, there’s everything imaginable underwater.
In Tulamben you can swim by the wreck of the USS Liberty, while around the Komodo Islands you’ll find turtles, sunfish, giant manta rays, and white-tip sharks gliding around you as if to say welcome (or maybe sizing you up for dinner).
Every dive feels like stepping into a giant aquarium, only without the protective glass. Just make sure you don’t look too tasty!
6. Indonesia has one of the world’s largest young populations
Indonesia is a paradise for young people: 165 million people under 30 ready to make you feel ancient and mutter, “Back in my day, things were different…”
People over 60? Much rarer, at just 8% of the population.
Young Indonesians have that confidence only people who’ve never used a floppy disk can have. All you can do is pull on your stretch jeans and try to keep up.
