Awesome things to see in Sri Lanka: temples, beaches, and elephants with amazing memories!

Discover Sri Lanka’s wonders: the giant rock of paranoia, wild tea plantations, super-slow trains, and kleptomaniac monkeys!

Sri Lanka isn’t just postcard-perfect beaches and ancient monasteries. Nope, it’s so much more. Think elephants, painfully slow trains, and tea plantations that look like they came straight out of Alice in Wonderland!

And there’s even more spectacular stuff: you’ll find historic cities, over-the-top nature, giant animals, and delicious rice and curry dishes you’ll definitely try to recreate back home. SPOILER: You won’t manage it!

Sigiriya: the rock of the paranoid king!

Sigiriya is a giant rock that looks like it came straight out of a fantasy tale.

But beware: climbing to the top is no gentle stroll in your local park. It’s more like a legal form of torture, with endless stairs and the constant feeling you might tumble into a ravine (great sales pitch, right?).

Trust me, though—once you finally get up there and see the absolutely jaw-dropping view, you’ll forget all about the effort!

And then there’s the whole story of the unhinged king who built his fortress on top of it.

King Kashyapa was a man with serious trust issues. The kind of guy who’d probably put a padlock on his trash bin before leaving the house, just so you get the idea.

This fellow took the throne after murdering his father by walling him up alive. And all because... he wanted to be the boss.

A real charmer, in short.

So the reign begins, but there’s one problem: his rightful brother, Moggallana, does not take it well. He flees to India and, naturally, starts planning a comeback with an army to make Kashyapa pay.

At this point Kashyapa thinks: “I can’t trust anyone.” And honestly, he wasn’t entirely wrong. So he decides to build this fortress on top of a gigantic rock.

Why? Well, if you live 200 meters up in the air, it’s harder for people to come and bother you.

Then comes the final battle. Moggallana returns, armed and seriously angry, ready to reclaim what’s his. Kashyapa, meanwhile, becomes convinced that his men have abandoned him. So what does he do? He doesn’t run, he doesn’t hide... he takes his own life.

And that’s that: in the end, he did it all to himself—living in terror of his enemies while being his own worst one.

The zen Sri Lankan train: a 20-km/h journey into nowhere

You know those slow, crowded little trains that look like they rolled out of an old vintage postcard? Well, Sri Lanka is the Mecca of retro trains that will give you a full slow-motion experience!

The coolest one of all is the route from Ella to Kandy (or the other way around). The best part is that no one ever seems to know exactly where it starts and where it ends—like one of my granddad’s New Year’s toasts!

It moves so slowly that you can lean out the window and not only take photos, but practically pick flowers, chat with the tea pickers, and still have plenty of time to mind your own business for the whole trip!

But hey, it’s more of a mystical exercise in patience than a means of transport.

Elephants, leopards, buffaloes, and the usual pain-in-the-neck monkeys

Elephants are the true rulers of Sri Lanka. With those enormous ears and their all-purpose trunks, they wander around at their own pace, blocking paths with the calm confidence of creatures that have nothing to prove. Their slow walks may turn your route into a long pause, but really—who are you to be in a hurry? These giants are also incredibly intelligent and, thanks to their memory, they might remember you even years later, so be careful how you treat them!

Then there are the leopards of Yala National Park. Everyone wants to see them, but very few actually do: they hide in plain sight among the branches better than anyone else. You need hawk eyes to spot them, but when you finally do, you instantly understand why they’re considered among the most fascinating animals of all.

Water buffaloes are the true masters of doing absolutely nothing, always immersed up to their necks in muddy pools, as if they had one single mission: living stress-free. Calm, yes—but only until you annoy them. Then you may discover just how powerful an angry bovine charge can be. The rest of the time, they spend their days in groups, enjoying relaxing mud baths and idle chatter.

Monkeys are exactly the chaotic troublemakers you’d expect. Always on the move, they jump everywhere and watch your every move. It’s not unusual to see them come closer just to figure out whether you’ve got something worth stealing. They’re more annoying than mosquitoes, endlessly curious, and completely at ease in every situation—which makes them as entertaining as they are unpredictable.

Tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya: where you feel like British nobility, only sweatier

Nuwara Eliya, also known as Sri Lanka’s Little England, isn’t famous just for its cool climate or colonial cottages. No, the true star here is tea. And not the teabag kind you quickly make when you’re feeling a bit low. We’re talking about Ceylon tea, the undisputed king of hot drinks. This is serious stuff—the caviar of leaves—revered around the world like a divine nectar.

Picture the scene: endless hills covered in tea bushes so neat they look ruler-drawn, all wrapped in fresh air that smells like newly cut grass. Here, tireless tea pickers work with swift, precise movements, plucking the finest leaves and dropping them into their huge baskets. And watching them, you might think: “Ah, what an idyllic life!” Then you try keeping up with them for ten minutes and realize that, no, plantation life is definitely not for you.

Dambulla: temples as far as the eye can see (and unsettling statues)

Dambulla is the right place if you still haven’t had your fill of temples. There are more Buddha statues here than tea in Nuwara Eliya! But be warned: every statue seems to stare straight into your eyes, scanning your soul like an X-ray machine, as if they knew all your most embarrassing secrets. A little unsettling? Very much so!

You may even find yourself crying at the foot of one of the statues, confessing: “Yes, I admit it, I was the one who stole that sandwich from the guide—I was hungry!”

After sweating buckets to reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with an incredible view... and, of course, a gang of cursed little monkeys ready to steal your lunch! Want a tip? Keep your food hidden in your backpack and enjoy the temples’ zen silence—at least until the next ninja monkey shows up to snatch your cookies.

The beaches of Tangalle: sprawl out like a collapsed turtle!

Finally, after all this adventure-fueled chaos, it’s time to stretch out and do absolutely nothing. And what better place than Tangalle? Stunning beaches, blinding white sand, and palm trees swaying as if they’re on holiday too. And the sea? Go ahead and flop down—even the fish here seem too lazy to swim!

Now, if you still have some energy left—or your religion forbids you from relaxing for even a second—you should know that you can also go surfing or enjoy amazing diving here.

But let’s be honest: after that hike up Sigiriya, who feels like moving a muscle? Much better to collapse onto the sand and let the ocean rock you gently. If you’re lucky, you might even see turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs. Ah, the miracle of life!

Galle: the citadel straight out of a historical novel

Last stop, but definitely not the least cool: Galle!

Here, every stone seems eager to tell you a story... even if all you really wanted was to find a shady spot and cool off.

You’ll find everything here: Dutch forts, ancient walls, little lanes full of shops, and cafés that look like they belong in a design magazine (the one you flip through but never buy). But don’t let the chic atmosphere fool you: Galle is a unique mix of history and tropical chaos.

The highlight? Galle Fort, built in 1588 by the Portuguese and later made even more impressive by the Dutch. A true giant that has withstood wars, tsunamis, and all kinds of turmoil. Walk along its walls and you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time, while below you there are lively markets, street food stalls, and the sea crashing against the rocks.

That’s Galle: chaotic, breathtakingly beautiful, and filled with an irresistible charm that makes you want to stay one more day... or maybe for life.
